|

I have a Korg Concert C50 that my Dad bought new in 1992. The serial number is 000133. I'm not sure if that means its #133, but whatever.
I remember when he bought it, and a few years in he had a problem with it and had a repair guy come look at it. I know he had some motherboard or something sent to Korg for replacement.
Fast forward to 2015 - My dad gives me the piano and its still in perfect working order - up until 2 days ago.
I was playing it all of a sudden the sound out of it was getting softer and softer until it started "crackling". I quickly turned it off, remembering when the same thing happened way back when. I turned it back on, none of the LED's light up, but I can hear it getting power.
I told my Dad, and he actually had the receipt from 1996 for when he had it repaired. The person replaced the capacitors then - but they sent the board out anyway.
I found this video on youtube -

I'd really just replace everything if I could - but I can't find boards anywhere!
Does anyone have advice? Is it worth repairing? Should I try replacing the capacitors?
Thanks! |

A lot of consumer, and non consumer i.e. expensive lab equipment, dating from the 90s has a high risk of suffering from electrolytic capacitor rot. There's no harm in having a look inside the unit for the telltale signs of the problem. Bulging electrolytic capacitor can tops are often a giveaway, and/or signs of corrosion and leakage out of the bottom of the capacitors, though this latter sign should not be confused with glue or epoxy encapsulant between PCB and capacitor body to stop vibration-induced solder joint fatigue.
