|
|
Has anyone compared these devices?
I'm curious as to how they might overlap. Does the Octatrack do much of what the V Synth can do or even more perhaps?
I do realize that the Octatrack II is not out yet but it should be much the same in terms of any comparison. _________________ http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=forum&id=1251 |

From my understanding (I have both) they are very different beasts. What do you want from them that might be similar and maybe I can help.
From what I can see the OT 2 looks pretty much like the OT 1 with a better screen. In the future I guess there is hope it might support ovebridge but I see no mention of this from Elektron. There is also hope that it might have a bit more processing power and will get more functionality in the future. |

I was just wondering if the OT would be similar to the VSynth in sound mangling etc
Always thought the VS was overpriced. And now too old especially for second hand ones _________________ http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=forum&id=1251 |

The VS is very good at taking a sample and turning it into a synth sound that is nothing like the original sample. It's timbre/pitch and time shifting are also extremely good. It is quite magical nothing else comes near I think. Have a look at this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EQXkSKbX5Ww
The OT is good at cutting samples up and playing parts of it in different orders and with different "fx" using the sequencer and plocks. You can choose a section of a sample and time stretch it to play harmonically but it is far more limited than the VS. |

Given the popularity of the VS its strange that Roland did not keep it going and perhaps produce a lower cost version. A shame really. _________________ http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=forum&id=1251 |

likely a financial decision. Roland went thru some restructuring and other changes a few yrs ago. Budget for more product development gets the ax when there are internal issues with the operation _________________ Kronos 88. MODX8

Thats so typical Roland, they have thrown so many good things away when moving to a whole new product range...
While Korg made it the power of the Kronos, to keep all things Korg aboard... Roland always tries new and intuitive things... _________________ Korg Kronos 2/88 , Genos, Mainstage3 +VSTsu, ipad pro, GSi Gemini, Roland Integra 7, Jupiter Xm, Yamaha motif XS rack, Ketron SD90.

I think Roland dropped the varios line that culminated in the VSynth because people didn't get it and sales were bad, the whole idea was a bit ahead of its time. From the "sampler" perspective people wanted keymapped type sample playback not sample manipulation at the level that varios offers.
It would be great if they released something new using this technology, I'd definately buy it! |

Both are awesome, but very different machines. The Octatrack is great for beats, while the V-Synth excels at coming up with fantastic, never before heard sounds.
I suggest getting both |

Out of curiosity what would be the closest current hardware or VST/AU to the synth? |

Maybe something like iZotope Iris? I don't think there's something that is really equivalent. |

There is several engines in the V-synth...
So i guess it will require several VST's to archieve those results
For the VA/sample part, i guess Alchemy comes closest _________________ Korg Kronos 2/88 , Genos, Mainstage3 +VSTsu, ipad pro, GSi Gemini, Roland Integra 7, Jupiter Xm, Yamaha motif XS rack, Ketron SD90.
