Pa4X Best Saving Format Options and Speed Benchmarks

Post by AntonySharmman »

Many of us had blamed Pa3X ST-BY battery concept and now power users will deal with the real face of slow loading of
custom resources in Load.ALL format !
Although Pa4X OS is 20% faster than Pa3X , factory HD is extremely slow plus the fact that is also using USB 2.1 ptotocol !

My benchmark on Media data transfer on Pa4X OS v.2 was made with my un-locked commercial SET Platinum Edition 800Mb
in development format that I work with (9000 samples/262 styles) and occupies the whole free Ram (800Mb compressed) !
Note that Pa4X motherboard media communication is only under USB 2 protocol and internal HD uses a SATA to USB2 converter !

- Pa4X Boot time with full 400Mb custom Ram : 96 seconds (because of faster internal flash memory)

Read some loading and saving , time refferences in Internal Korg HD :
- Save ALL SET at KORG HD : 100 seconds (faster because of transferring data from fast flash memory)
- Load ALL SET from KORG HD : 335 seconds (5 min & 35") , almost as slow as pa3X without battery !
- Backup or Restore BKP file from KORG HD : 155 seconds (2 min & 35") , max USB 2 protocol speed

Now read benchmark of external Sundisk Extreme Pro USB 3.0 stick of 64GB (compatible with USB2 protocol) that I
always use for resources development :

- Save ALL SET at USB 3.0 stick : 62 seconds , 40% faster write speed than Korg HD !
- Load ALL SET from USB 3.0 stick : 270 seconds (4 min & 30") , advantage of USB 3 architecture , faster than internal HD !
- Backup or Restore BKP file from USB 3.0 stick : 155 seconds (2 min & 35") , max USB 2 protocol speed

As you can observe , BKP file now is the one way saving proceedure for your custom resources that saves you time and
preserve data integrity since only this format has file parity checker and remains the most safe format from data corruption
of STY/PCG files that PaSeries can't verify in deep level , plus the fact that BKP can retain factory resources changes !

Thanks for reading

Ok,this is new.....i idd a full backup while in 1.2.4 Os,but hadn't try with new Os till now.

When i try to perform a full Resource backup,a message '' Os backup failed! The media is write protected'' appears.....

In Global settings, everything is unlock.....I am getting old, i know, but right now, i can't figure out what i am doing wrong, any ideas?

Has nothing to do with Global settings ! this message concerns media you're trying to save and happens in the following cases !
- You're trying to save in a folder that is either protected nor has made in a PC with administrator attributes ! use unprotect
function from Media/Utility menu.
- If Media is external USB thumb drive , first format it in your Pa4X and then save BKP file in USB root.

ok, nothing had to do with folder's attributes..... It's the problem with symbols,in my case was something like : 2.01 SZ BACKUP 31/1/18 ,which causes that problem.
I believe it's the slashes...
When changed it to just letters,it did perform the backup file as usual ...

As i said i am getting older ;)
Thanks Antony for the help!!!!
But i can't understand why after that message, the instrument keeps that progress bar of backup...it s a king lack of Os' to respond properly after that, while it should just go back to normal....you can try it if you like, that's another bug.
