Hello

Wanting to buy a microKorg XL but I want to know what I am in for, in terms of problems, issues, repairs, solutions to bugs and so on.

I had a very bad experience with a Korg Prophecy that put me off buying Korg for a while. But I am ready to come back and get thrilled everytime I check out the microKorg or microKorg XL

this is my due diligence ..

Hi,

Too bad you had not such a good experience with Korg before...

Indeed you figured out few problems with the XL. However, you'll encounter that with every device I would say if you search google.

On itself the XL (XL+ now) is a quite good board. It is not that it has real intrinsic flaws seen very often by different users.
Fingers crossed, my mKXL is now more than 10 years old and still in mint condition. Not a singly issue encountered so far. I must admit I'm not gigging with it, so it simply sits on my desk. I'm still playing it regularly and I still like it.

It also depends a bit what your style of playing is (gently turn knobs or go wild with them), do you plan to gig with it, and so on.

The build quality is decent, but not rock solid. It has a sturdy plastic case with a metal front plate. The only thing which is rather weak are the 3 pots for parameter editing/performance and the tempo pot. But if you turn them gently it is just fine.

Sound wise, it is a 8 voices virtual analog synth with a 16 band vocoder. The PC/MAC editor is really very handy to explore new sounds. Very much better and preferred by me than using the deep menu diving using the pots on the board itself. With that respect, the microKorg is more handy than the XL I think because the parameter matrix on the board itself. The editing and sound exploration is for me a lot of the fun with this board. If you browse around you'll find quite some free patches for download.

FYI: The original microKorg has only 4 voices and a 8 band vocoder. The onboard effects are also more limited compared to the XL.

I would say, go to a shop and try out an XL+ for your self and see how you feel about it.

Have fun.

Bought a Microkorg XL + for a good deal, used and local

and it's an awesome little keyboard ... digging now and programming, getting used to the somewhat unorthodox programming/saving/editing quirks

but what amazing little keyboard

thinking of painting the chassis red

anyway this keyboard is so compact with such a big sound that it's a nobrainer. Having the Mellotron strings and flutes is awesome ... anyone know if they will release Mellotron Choir? Then my life would be complete

Great!
Glad to hear you enjoy it.

Unfortunately, there will be no updates. Maybe you can program a sound close enough to the mellotron choir? E.g. it is possible to 'record' a vowel in the vocoder and then use it without needing the mic later on.

Have fun
