Hi Amit,

There are plenty of decent, reasonably-priced mics around, and so I guess you can't go too far wrong. I do sample and, although it tends to be more field recording, I do sometimes do the sort of sampling that you are talking about.

I use this firm's mics - http://www.microphonemadness.com/ - and have always found them to be really good. The initial recommendation came from attending a sound recording workshop hosted by the excellent Chris Watson, very well known over here in the UK for providing a high proportion of the sound recording on BBC nature programmes.

In my old band (with my old Motif sampler), I sampled myself singing my bandmates names. Then I'd play them to introduce the band members during a show, playing arpeggios and weird full chords. I got a lot of mileage out of that.

I just used my trusty old '58. The hardest part was figuring out how to loop on the last syllable of their names so that I could hold them out.
