|
|
Just read the news this morning that all Intel processors dating as far back as Haswell suffer from a major bug which leaks data from the kernel.
The bug is at hardware level and allows the data in the memory from the kernel space to be read at the user space.
So far the patch to 'fix' this bug reduces the performance significantly, some 30% and even above.
This is really a horror scenario for any company and no doubt this has top priority at Intel headquarters at this moment.
I was going to build a new audio system based on the i7 8700k, but this news made me decide to wait a while, and look at AMD instead since their processor line does not suffer from this problem. |

just a hardware back door.
developers do it on all hardware!!
lol nothing new here.
same old stuff different day!!
security issue???
you bet if it is to be used online!!
that is why if you need to be online you need the better antivirus and full hardware firewall that covers the kernel.
I have always said the best way to cover yourself is to unplug!!
design the studio on stand alone hardware...
there is no reason after initial setup why we need to be online!!
updates sure...
but why would you want to update in the middle of a recording project!!
this soft synth and soft recording has went to a bad place...
spy ware!! in the hardware as well as in the software!!
most of the time they do it as a combo!!
if you want secure...
unplug from the net!!
go intra net only!! or closed internal network for the lay person.
computers are fast when you first buy them..
and slow over time..
why you ask???
all the data feedback... they are made to "call home"
basic nelson for computers!!
they track every thing you do!!
in the name of improving the experience....
I say BS!!
it is all about marketing and the dollar!!
so setup the studio.
turn off all update features (kinda tricky)
and unplug!!
I physically remove the wifi radio hardware as well as blue tooth on the secure network.
most are the same radio card in laptops
and go cat 7 cables or fiber optic for internal network communication. _________________ my site klimaco.net

oh yes amd is faster
but there is compatibility issues with some hardware...
and some software...
it is way better in the last 2 years...
most of the amd works now with almost every configuration.
do I run amd??
yes on the Linux systems!
not with Microsoft...
on ms I always use the large core intel
and never ever use the cheap intel processors!
there are some new 64 core stuff developing right now..
looks good!!
and this may be a marketing ploy to get interest in the new hardware!!
the rendering is awesome!!
still priced in the 50K usd range...
but all new stuff is like that when it first comes out!!
10 years from now it will be in most 500.00 usd computers!! _________________ my site klimaco.net

This really puts a firm dent in Intel's reputation.
Not only that, the single bug now has turned into three vulnerabilities, the others being being labeled as 'Spectre' and 'Meltdown'.
Spectre also worked on AMD and ARM architectures according to the researchers who tested it, however it apparently only works on AMD after changing the registers in the OS.
It's a mess and it is best to wait until some of the smokes clears up.
The shady side of this issue is the news that Intel's CEO sold all of the shares he was allowed to sell by contract from October onward.
I find it hard to believe that this is a mere coincidence.
It would be best to use an offline computer for audio, but some manufacturers no longer support this option (Native Instruments' Access for instance).
As I wrote before, it is best to wait for new tests.
I am curious what Intel's plans are for upcoming processors since it is a hardware problem. |

been meaning upgrading my 11-year old system. I have been lovingly maintaining it and upgrading parts as needed since I've owned it, but I'm still limited to SATA2 and USB 2.0. It's a great system, very dependable, but now the processor and memory are upgraded to the absolute limit. Never been happier to still be using a Core2Quad QX-6800 at 2.93GHz ... guess I'll wait a while on the new upgrade! Thank you to Jan1 for posting this. _________________ Korg Kronos-61, 01/Wfd, SONAR Pro |

yup on the back door..
I do it as well on software...
then remove the back door access on the final version.
it is supposed to be a way in if it faults to shut down so you can see the post info for the start up.... or the data hand off flow.
now days that we have blue tooth every thing and wifi on the same devices
one device can get you in to another secure device....
can any one say echo or alexia??
danger danger on those devices!!
be sides the big brother 1984 issues ...
any good design tech can reroute your pwf or secure keys to an export file...
and export it right from your e-mail!!
it is all code!!
easy to do!!
and it can be a worm sleeper thing as well!!
it may not activate till certain things happen or are accessed.
just saying!!
like they say "see something say something" _________________ my site klimaco.net

hard to do in biz...
but
you have to if you want your data secure.
It is getting so any one any where can get in to any thing that is on the net...
so....
unplug

I have Ivy Bridge Xeon. lol.
Post scriptum: Why nobody talks about build in Rfid chips on new Intel processors?!!
That clearly has nothing to do with computer hardware and that thing is clearly a spying device!!!
I do not know how they laired about why they putted Rfid chip in to computer processor and why it is needed there, but i think people must be totally blind not to see the true propose of it!!! _________________ https://слово-божье.рф

The whole security issue is a mess at the moment.
Intel released patches which apparently made systems unstable, and which even could corrupt data, Microsoft now issued an update which undoes the Intel Spectre patch, Intel CEO assured that the next 10mm CPU's of Intel will have hardware solutions to the problem, Linus Torvalds criticizes Intel for release a garbage patch containing code of which it is not clear what exactly it does.
The best solution at the moment would be indeed to keep an audio system offline, but the problem is that companies such as Native Instruments and KORG require online activation.
It is not clear at all what to do if you need to upgrade, just wait for the next Intel processor line-up, or choose AMD over Intel, or simply take a possible performance loss for granted and go ahead and upgrade right now and just go online for software activation purposes. |
