I added a second SDD early on my 1st Gen Kronos. As soon as I heard it was possible, I got the parts and installed it. Being a computer nerd who always opens up my computer for upgrades, I had no hesitation.

Well... just recieved my kronos2.
What I think is, I will add more ram and a second ssd when the time comes for me to replace my battery...
What say folks?

Well... I've done this

If you bought a K2 you cannot add more RAM. It is already maxed out. You can add a second SSD if you need storage space.

Thanks! I've read your post with interest! I would like to hear more about your vast EXs library and how you use them on the SSD?

Not much more to say. I’m not a big synth programmer (and the beast is just a bit an overkill for me, but i’m slowly learning) ‘couse i’m more focused on playing, but the sound quality of the kronos itself and of the EXs libraries plus the all-in-one studio of the workstation lead me to go with the kronos.
The Exs collection you see seems to be a thake-my-money g.a.s. effect but every single exs is much more best sounding of the factory sounds and/or specifically aimed to a sound i have in my head!
So i relized i needed more room in the ssd and made the swap. The system ssd (500gb) is primarily dedicated to OS, factory sounds, ex libraries and save-all files. The second ssd (1tb) is dedicated to everything i do: songs, audio tracks, new samples.. say the fist ssd is “korg” and the second it’s just “ME” Wink
The optional Exs i have are just installed as normal on the first ssd and i load the exs i need when i need it.
Another big modding i’ve done is to recover 2 more usb ports an 1 ethernet port that are INSIDE the Kronos. Inside the kronos there is just a regular pc motherboard with all the I/O you can find in a pc motherboard, so you have multiple usb ports, ethernet and even a video out (but non for what you see in the touch screen of the kronos). To me was just CRAZY to know you have this utilities unused i don’t know WHY!!!
So with my Dremel... i’ve made a HOLE (!!!) down in the bottom metal plate of the kronos on the far right side and with some extension cable with screw-able ports now i have 2 more usb ports an one very fast ethernet port without any unaestetic prob at all! Plus now my kronos is networked in my lan so via file transfer i can download and upload from/to my kronos an laptop everything: pcgs files, samples, save-all backups!
And... call me crazy... i’ve done all the ssd and hardware mods in the first week the Kronos 88 LS arrived in my house! Cool Very Happy
That’s all!

Wow! That's really amazing work, Guttalaser! Thanks for detailing all your mods and how you use them. That you got two additional USB ports and a functioning ethernet port—wow!

You also have the most impressive EXs library collection of probably any other Kronos owner. I'm extremely pleased with my WavesArt Cinematic Suite, but I was thinking of perhaps buying a single KApro EXs library for some added texture. I was looking at the Epic Composer Private Collection (EXs #260, #261, #262, #263). If you were only going to pick one KApro library, which would you choose? (I'm mainly interested in solo strings, brass, woodwinds, and orchestral percussion.)

I have the Epic Composer, the 5th Element and the Animated Orchestra and those libraries cover most of the orchestral ensamble and articulations you need (maybe with some overlapping with the Cinematic collection).
For solo cellos the Exs24 Dimensional Cello and for solo violins the Exs135 Paganini Violin are the best IMHO.

Oh right, the Dimensional Cello EXs also looked interesting (and, affordable!). Thanks for your comments! Didn't see the Paganini Violin EXs. Does the Paganini include portamentos? I'll have to try and demo those soon.

I have to add that the WavesArt Cinematic Suite string ensembles and solos sound really good. In particular, the Stradivarius solo violas and violins sound very nice with signature high-frequencies and treble-ey midtones which cut-through very nicely in any mix. It will be interesting to see how the KApro solo cello and Paganini violin compare.

Both the Dimensional Cello and the Paganini Solo Violins are from KApro.
Here you can ear some demos:

Thanks—yes, both sound very good! Since I have you here (and everyone seems reticent to comment out loud about any particular vendor's library), could you please comment on whether the Dimensional Cello EXs and Paganini Violin EXs sound markedly better than any of the solo strings in the other KApro orchestral libraries? Or do the solo stings in the other libraries sound about as good, but with perhaps fewer articulations?

To me both sound better than the solo counterparts in other libraries.
But it’s an easy answer, ‘coz i think that a library focused on a specific instrument can have more details (even those little noises) more room for samples and more programming for switching/layering articulations (i.e.: controllers programming like x/y joystick, knobs, touch strip etc) so the playing experience is much more satisfying and the track sound better.
So... the long short... if the $$$ investiment is not so heavy... why not to have those “colors” in your palette.

I suggest to download all demo versions , install them , try and compare yourself contents with the premium library you already own !
It's one button click to uninstall them and load back your Cinematic Suite.PCG & KSC ... Wink
Concerning topic's title , all commercial protected libraries' samples bin files are always installed in Kronos boot SSD/PCM Linux system
partition , so always the first option to upgrade SSD is cloning it to a bigger one as Guttalaser mentioned and 2nd SSD would be useful
for custom (your own) or freeware libraries !

Would an external Flash Thumb Drive accomplish the same thing as adding an internal drive, or does an additional internal drive do more than an external one ?

It's not a subject of internal or external media , but a matter of communication port with CPU !
Sata 2 ports of mobo , except high speed they can support continuous raw data that streaming from disk requires and
this is impossible via low speed packet protocol of USB2 communication port.
Besides that , any media connected at USB 2 port , can be used only to load into Ram any external custom samples
library , even pre-loading KSC files from there at start-up (if media is connected) and if required free Ram is enough
for direct loading with Pleload.KSC contents and of course you can use it for any kind of media storage like internal
SSD but with the nominal USB 2 speed protocol !

Hope this helps
