When we replaced our electrical panel with a 200A, 40/40 panel, I installed a whole-house surge-protector (also known as "whole-house surge protective devices," or SPDs). Much more robust than power-strips. Highly recommended! _________________

I don't know the make or model, but it's the kind that goes between the meter and panel—ours is a cylindrical SPD device about four-inches deep. The electrician said it cost about $100, and the installation only took a minute. _________________

Thanks to everyone for their input on this. I liked the discussion about data storage. For clarification - if I have data stored on a flash drive for a coupla years, is it in danger of being lost or corrupted?
I have all my songs backed up on flash drives. Some were saved there years ago. |

Flash drive wear is based on use, predominantly on write cycles. This causes something called tunnel oxide layer degradation within the structure of the semiconductor memory chip. Modern flash drives should be good for 100,000 write/erase cycles, so simply using a flash drive for a few hundred backups should be fine. In any case, backup strategy should include the use of more than one backup storage media, perhaps alternating, or rotating through several flash drives, and possibly including an external hard drive, at regular intervals. |
