Most USB 3 devices are combatible to older USB 2 , read device specifications !

Will a DVD drive with USB 3.0 connector work? Or does it have to be 2.0 because my Kronos is 7 years old?

I haven't tried it for system reboot, but I have the Lite-On EBAU108. I bought a different drive, to start, and it did not work with the Kronos. The Lite-On did. It is USB 2.

Perhaps someone has a better recommendation. The Kronos is kind of finicky about DVD drives.

Looks like this unit works fine. I just plugged it into the Kronos USB and turned the Kronos on. After about 20 seconds, I got this screen, ready to boot from the DVD.

Good news! I bought an LG DVD drive 2.0USB and the DVD's arrived from Parts is Parts yesterday. I plugged the DVD drive into the Korg and turned on the board and it re-installed everything. Thank God!

So now I'm wondering about updating to the latest OS. I think the DVD's put me on v. 2.0.2 or something like that.

It was me trying to update with a thumb drive that caused my board to crash in the first place. Maybe I unzipped the files from the latest Korg download incorrectly or need to format the thumb drive on the Korg.

Any guidance on how to proceed?

2.0 is ancient.

Make sure your thumb drive is new and sqeaky clean.
Spend $10 at your office store for a new thumb drive.

IOW it could cause problems to use an overused thumb drive with a bunch of deleted files. Some files never really go away on these things . Temp folders, trash folders, etc, etc . Avoid all that crap

Then Korg format your thumb drive, quick 32 should do it.

When you D/l the current OS, make sure it is proceeding cleanly. If it is stalling
out due to your Internet or problems on the Korg server, that can contribute
to file problems

Make sure the only stuff on your thumb drive is the unzipped OS.

And make sure you follow the exact steps on this process. It is painless if the steps are followed per the Korg instructions

I've already wrote in previous page what has caused your problem !
Nothing to do with any thumb drive or corrupted downloaded files , read again the above and just purchase the cheapest
real battery UPS (for PC use) and use it during update to be sure , any other use of it , is optional !

TIPS :
- If a downloaded file is corrupted then UnRar/UnZip utility will check file parity and will inform you if the file is corrupted !
- You can never decompress a corrupted file ... this is a rule and that's why net distribution of files is always in compressed format !
- If USB drive files are corrupted then Kronos OS will check files integrity and will not proceed to any update !
- Always format USB thumb drives you use in Kronos with Kronos OS
- Never Update Kronos system without a UPS connected on Kronos !!!
