Kronos FX Tutorial Series

Making tutorials going over the Kronos effects. I always try to get into the nitty gritty details that you won't find in the manual. Stuff like latency times, the difference between the stereo and mastering limiters, red vs dyna etc. I'll update this thread as I go.

Based on the Dunlop Dyna Comp MXR M-102 originally made in 1976.

This was my favorite one so far. Loved learning that the stereo limiter is really a no lag/less feature rich version of the stereo compressor and also that it always functions in peak mode while the mastering limiter is always on RMS. Insights like that are why I started this series in the first place.

This is a tricky unit to use and one that I don't feel fully comfortable with. It's probably better thought of as a dynamic EQ.
Like all the mono vs stereo effects, this unit is easier on the processor if you use the mono version. Got the mono version to peak at 20% when inserted into every IFX, MFX and TFX slots. The stereo version peaked the effects CPU at 32% when taking up all 16 effects slots.

Note I did check the phase cancellation when flipping the peaking style EQ's to make sure that they had the same curve when cutting and boosting. Some analog style british EQ's will actually cut narrow and boost wide but that's not the case here. Also checked the shelves off cam and got the same results.

In this video I show how to do Mid/Side processing with the Kronos... who new?
At 10:48 I mention how I was confused by the M/S version being +6dB. The reason is because +6dB is a doubling of amplitude (I used to think it was 10dB, but I guess 10dB is a doubling of perceived volume since we hear things on a logarithmic, as opposed to linear scale).
The reason the amplitude was louder is because we took each channel and doubled it to make our mid. Literally we took the left channel and summed it with the right and took the right channel and summed it with the left creating more sound data going to the left and right channel output. In other words we took what was originally two channels of audio data and doubled them by summing them together.
Stereo pan law is actually able to compensate for this by allowing the left or right channel to drop -6dB when panned center. So if I had my stereo pan law at -6dB then I wouldn't have run into the volume increase problem. I'm going to check the internal stereo pan law for the Kronos operating system soon.

I didn't know wah't I was doing in this comparison. More of a livestream focused on exploring the five different wah's.

Anything can be a multiband processor with the stereo isolator.
