I have a Kronos X61 and Montage 7, and they really go well together, so a MODX will the be perfect Christmas gift for your Kronos! _________________ Derek Cook - Java Developer

Thats where non Korg keyboards, etc gets a good discussion.

Well I decided on adding a MODX8 to my collection, and I am not disappointed.
I pondered the idea of a Montage over the time, but like many, the expense vs much of the stuff I'd pay for and wouldn't use, stopped me from taking the plunge. I've never really been much of a Yamaha soul, mainly sticking with Korg and Roland.
The MODX has the right level of features vs price and after playing it, there was no hesitation. Comparing the 6,7 and 8, there was no decision to be made by me, as being a piano player, the weighted keybed was what I wanted. I'm quite happy with the feel of it, and the 8 is still very light in the scheme of things. I find alternating between playing weighted actions that are different from each other improves my muscle memory and playing skills. Having said that, my favourite is still the RH3. I always liked the Casio PX weighted action vs portability, but I think the GHS on the MODX is now my fav portable. It has a very tight mechanical feel. Expressable dynamics is possibly not as good as RH3 or Casio PX, but that's just my impressions. Maybe with practice, I'll play to it's nuance and I may not notice a difference.
I loaded the Montage Bosendorfer, and while it is a nice piano, the Kronos pianos seemed to be richer in harmonics. (I've always found Yamaha and Roland pianos to have a certain bell like ring on certain samples, which to me indicate suppressed higher order harmonics), but that's just my opinion.
Now, on the comparison side, it makes a nice compliment to the Kronos and FA. I love my Kronos, and it still is my personal favourite, but I like the MODX differences in sound and I think the particular features which are worth having are the realtime performance interface and the unique sounds which go with it. Not better than Kronos, just pleasantly different. I don't even think the MODX displaces my FA, as it has it's own appeal.
I'm trying to step back and feel a "general" impression without nit picking, and it's a nice keyboard to have in addition to my other technologies....simple as that

Thats good to read. We have the same gear- the K and the FA
I thought the MODX might eclipse the FA . I much prefer to not have ' too much stuff'. Simply, I can't easily integrate 10,000 sounds when I busy writing new songs. I realize all the boards have unique strengths so maybe I need to make room somehow for all 3 _________________ Kronos 88. MODX8

Yes Greg, I don't think it would be easy to pick one over the other, however I've always said that if I could only keep one board it would be the Kronos. But in reality I can accommodate several.
I've recently undergone a bit of gear restructure. I original had an FA08 controlling a K2-61 when the FA first came out. I didn't keep the FA08 for long, not because of the WS in general, but for a couple of personal keybed reasons. I regretted not having an FA of some description, and vowed to get another one, possibly an 06, but I didn't.... because of the keybed. When the 07 was released, that changed things for me.
Later I obtained and Integra07 which I control with the Kronos, and though the Integra overlaps with the FA, they both have unique features too, the Integra with a huge library of S/N sounds, and the 07 with lots of slots for studiosets and played from one keyboard live, (and the performance and sequencer features of course).
One should still make the decision on what to have and what to replace on personal needs, as reading everyone's views only adds to the arsenal of information required to make the personal decision. I think the MODX is unique enough relative to Kronos and FA that unless your decision criteria centers around the need for one keyboard only, having it as and addition does not add redundancy.

Enjoying our gear chat- we have similar prefs with the FA/Roland and our K's.
Would be fun 1 day to compare our prefs and priorities during practice time, etc.
My guess is while we have similar gear, our musical strengths and priorities might be different.
I am sure that having 'too many choices ' is counter productive to my song writing. Simply, managing all ( I mentioned 10,000) the sounds and analyzing their best use is not my strength. Shocking to read on a keyboard forum, I know.
Here is some psychology on why having numerous choices does not necessarily lead to 'happiness' :
Anyway, as a musician, I play to my strengths . If I concentrate too much on weaknesses , I bog down. This is another controversial topic for musicians.
We are pounded into believing that we need to practice 10,000 hours to achieve
a level of mastery. That is not so. _________________ Kronos 88. MODX8

Absolutely true!
I've always believed too much choice isn't necessarily better. My desire for more than the Kronos is a want, not a need. I have also always acknowledged that my most musically creative time of my life was when I was young with few options. I produced 2 electronic albums with an AtariST with only floppy disks, it controlling my meagre, and often home built synth hardware. These days I spend a lot more time exploring technology instead of being musically creative, and we've talked about this topic on the forum ad nauseam.
I also think that hardship is a great creative motivator, of which in my retirement years, I've not seen so much of
just returned the Yamaha modx and planning to buy the Kronos on Black Friday, I know the modx was more of a performance keyboard but I was not able to fully route it across multiple midi tracks in Ableton and trigger everything properly and individually as stated that its easily doable, tried everything including the multiple GM preset and every configuration within ableton and on the modx, even the Yamaha specialist on the phone wasn't able to do it himself on his end and was baffled cause he assumed it would have been a no brainer, is it easier routing the Kronos? plus no sampler on either the montage or modx and really didn't give me a warm gitty feeling the motif series did.
I mostly do everything in the box and am happy with all my plug-ins and this unit is for someone that I know who will also be using it live and in the studio and I wanted them to have that great feeling I once did with my motif, ill have access to it and be using it from time to time as well, but as soon as I got the modx I was hoping for a motif type feel and it failed my expectations and just could not get it routed across 16 midi tracks properly and toggle between parts as one might hope, I'm sure there was a way I just also felt like the sound and not having a sampler were in the way of me keeping it, I'm going to test out the Kronos before buying it and just wanted to know how you guys feel about the sound comparison between the two, Kronos and Montage(same as modx for the most part) not trying to hi-jack this thread so please ignore the question if you feel the need and I will reference one of the 300 other Kronos vs montage threads on the forum
btw I can only afford to get one or the other at the moment
but I know, I have all types of plug-in samplers in my daw, and have to treat them with about 3 different saturation plug-ins(Omnisphere seems to be the best but editing capabilities are not existent) to get about 90 percent of the sound I would get sampling directly into my motif, there was a certain type of saturation sampling directly into my motif provided as with other hardware samplers and can be really hard to recreate in a daw. Using an Apollo and unison plugs to sample into my interface helps but just doesn't provide that fullness and depth. I think thats nice that your able to load samples into the montage and modx but it's not the same imo and they really should have included a sampler at least on the montage
