Is there a midi command (other than Sysex) that can be used to control the tempo of a style?

I am programming ‘Zorba the Greek’ and whilst I could use the data entry wheel to change the style tempo, I would prefer to use external midi commands.

I have googled, and I don’t think ‘tempo’ is part of the control change midi standards?

Thanks in advance.

Not sure if this is what you're after, but maybe this video gives some useful hints:

Process in PA4X (and other PA's) is the still the same as in PA3X.

I am trying to set up a Song for ‘Zorba the Greek’, so I wanted to use midi to send a lot of gradual changes in tempo as the song progressed (rather than using the data wheel). The instructional video you sent is not exactly what I am after BUT will certainly be a helpful technique for some other songs that I have.

Thank you.

I do not know any midi-message to change Midi Sync of another device.

But you can use external Midi Sync for tempo (bmp) control - so timing control is taken over by external sync (sending sync messages).

Connect your external Midi Sync (maybe Cakewalk Sync Transport or similar). Use Midi settings (Setup General Controls) of "Clock Source" set to External Midi or External USB and at least one of the Midi-In-channels of Pa-Keyboard set to "Global".

Thanks Siebenherter,

I am not using an external device so that is not an option unfortunately.

I use Baum Songbook+ on iPad for my PDF music and Setlists. This calls up the Korg Songbook entry automatically, and I can also program midi commands to send to the Korg. But if there is no control change message or global command to vary tempo, will probably just use the data wheel.

Thanks for your suggestion.

I am not sure if that can help but in case:

So this is what I did -

Just made multiple Songbook entries of Zorba which were identical, except for different tempos:
Zorba
Zorba_2
Zorba_3. etc
and each had its own song code.

In my Songbook+ app, I added ‘action buttons’ at selected points in ‘Zorba the Greek’ which included NRPN code to select the next tempo variation (which kicks in at start of next measure). Simple to use, I just touch each action button whilst playing.

I also used a similar technique for ‘Day by Day’ which has a change of meter from 3/4 to 4/4.

Cool, that you could get it to work that way.
I will check out that app.

But, I am curious as to why it is simpler to tap on the iPad then to touch the Pa4X wheel? How many different tempos did you make?

Both hands are fairly busy in this song, but especially the RH. And I would struggle using the LH to set the wheel while I am playing. I would overshoot or undershoot the tempo I want.

But I can understand that others could handle the wheel better than I can.
