um yeah, so i liked the FM so much, i got another one.
or at least i was taken by the idea of having more than one part, having another bank of preset, another sequence, another output.
liked that idea so much that when a 3rd one at knockdown price with multi-power adapter came up, free shipping, i had that one too.
so now i have 3 or them, and i'm still a bit overwhelmed, wondering, is this too much? 3 to load up via Dexed, to power, wire, cable.
where does the mini thing cross the line ? |

I have four.
Don't regret it for a moment. They make it possible to modify patches live while playing a concert. |

yeah, i'm familiar with 6-Op FM now - i get mixed up with those abbreviated parameter names, especially around the scaling and velocity.
don't you wish they could receive individual parameter sysex ? !
so i took the lazy route and browsed through a large DX7 preset library, auditioning in Dexed, then sending over to the FM. works pretty well except i had to correct operator on/off state: the volca doesn't receive presets exactly: i think the DX7 does not memorise on/off state, and the Volca does.
the DX7 dump has (i think this is what i read) a checksum at the end, which the Volca tries to read as Operator on/off state for each of the 6 Op's.
but you just go through and switch them back on, resave; it can find worthwhile variations of the original preset.
seems a good way to manage it - not all the time, just for 'loading sessions' - i've only done it a couple of times, tbh , but it seems viable. it actually means using Dexed without a Volca present now, just to browse and locate sounds. (same thing with Voysyr for the Sample)
definitely not a live performance thing. worth doing though. single parameter sysex would be a huge improvement, if it could be hacked. |

chuffed this morning, that i have figured out how to copy presets in Dexed, from 'source' library banks, to a new User destination bank.
it can be done. the bottom preset display is the loaded bank, and the rightside preset display is the 'browser'.
you can drag presets onto the 'loaded' bank, and 'save'. you may want to make a backup of the Dexed default bank, or create a new bank - new banks appear next time you run Dexed. if you overwrite the default bank, it should be possible to have Dexed load with your favourites.
should make volcaFM management a lot easier than browsing aimlessly through thousands of presets each time.
(unfortunately Dexed doesn't like parameter randomization. thought that might be fun to try)
(correction: it does seem to work; if pitch goes way out of range you don't hear anything)
have just tried the old Cute VST plugin Hexter, and that seems to load banks
i made with Dexed, works with random.

have you tried polychaining - MIDI Solutions Events Processor Plus seems
like ( quite an expensive ) way to do it - if it can be done: would that mean
going to something like the Quadra Thru ? |

No, I haven't tried polychaining as such.
I have tried putting the same patches on two and putting them on different channels, then sequencing them with one of my sequencers - that works just great. |

yes, just looked into copying across patches and banks, and backing up to
audio data, which i'd overlooked.
have you tried the velocity fix ? |

No, because the way that I use them it doesn't matter that much. It's not as if I'm trying to play Brahms on them. |

sure. but it's nice anyway, if editing and triggering from keyboard.
apparently there's more to come. (the 'beta' download is no longer active anyway)
separately:
apparently, with midi out modded it can save its sounds via sysex, as well as
Syro data audio thingy. |

Feel sorry for you.
You really don't know how Korg is like mate.
Anyways I would never but never buy them , despite they are tiny as heck look so fragile that seem a couple of strong hits onto the floor they'll smash real easy since they are completely entirely made of plastic.
You're better off buying yourself a proper RC car instead mate.

just letting you know that i have a volcaFM at firmware *v1.06beta*
have been sent it for testing, so it should be ready soon.
unofficial v1.05 by pajen added Velocity reception over MIDI - which was
cool, although in Edit, the incoming velocity interfered a bit with edit values.
(but was well worth installing)
new version corrects this. also adds:
-program change (pattern change by ProgChange will be added too)
-bugfix to LFO amplitude scaling. this stops poppy/glitchy behaviour with
discontinuous LFO shapes, and ensures correct transfer of patches from Dexed.
MUCH better: Dexed is now a viable editor for volcaFM. the patch arrives the same,
an instant after sending, excellent. there is still a little thing with Feedback, that i've signalled.
but otherwise excellent, as it was supposed to be.
(korg had an elementary error in their code...)
-bug fix for operator on/off state. patches now arrive as intended, all ops on.
-2 new Global parameters, 9 & 10, for velocity reception off/on, and data transfer volca/DX
(see above for operator on/off, and retains ability to transfer between volcas)
hoping for a modwheel assignment (LFO pitchmod amount) and pattern change.
(would also like arpeggiator out over midi, haven't had a reply on that yet).
new firmware for volca Sample is also in the pipeline. |

The reason that I have four is that I use them together, live. They're light, they're cheap, they're sonically powerful. I sequence four timbres independently, and with enough polyphony to deal well with long tails.
As for fragility: I custom-built a box for them. Don't throw them on the floor, and they'll last a long time.
I wouldn't throw a Rhodes on the floor either. |
