Hello,

First, I have to say that I've installed a second 240 GB ssd. It worked well, except a very long samples loading time.
So, I've uninstalled it for using as an external usb drive.

So, I'm back with original 62 gb system SSD.

I have uninstalled all sound banks and erased all files. So, no file appears in disk mode.
In Option Info, I have checked that no bank has been let.

Of course, I've let all the system intalled !!

Now, going into Disk / Media Info, I can read this :

Total Size : 54 G

Free Size : 41 G

Knowing that the SSD size is 62 G, I guess 62-54 = 8 go for the Kronos system ?

So my question is : have you any idea about the non-free 54 - 41 = 13 G ?

Thanks a lot for your answer.

Lets clarify- you only have 1 internal SSD installed. I know about the external.

The issue or question is with your internal 62 gig SSD.

yes, taking 8 gig right off the top seems like a lot.

I vaguely recall 3 gig is needed by the Kronos OS for the usual factory streaming.

That leaves 5 gig to explain. My guess work is room for User KSC for streaming. Or room for 3rd party EX's that you have .

You should be able to work the #'s or math by reviewing big User files in DISK and your EXs on the KSC auto load tab.

Yes Greg, considering I'm getting back to one SSD only, 64g.

I don't know about 5 gig, as you said, but also for 13 another gig !

I have nothing installed : no User files, no third party files (I have transfererd all files on external disk).

So, I don't understand why I have not recovered all these gig !

You probably have some hidden partition.
Try to reformat SSD.

There is also likely to be space reserved for wear levelling. The manufacturer's spec sheet for the SSD doesn't give any detail in this regard, but it is common practice in SSDs.

that's a good answer. I have also noticed the SSD mfgr's don't provide much detail.

I agree, its common practice- possibly with much of storage. Even my larger USB sticks might have wear leveling. Removing/deleting files do not open up space.

There is also possibilities of wear out.
Kronos does not have a drive with the latest advancement in SSD.

Do SSDs slowly lose storage capacity over time?

No, but cheap drive wear out quickly.

Not to invite trouble, but I think Korg used a cheap SSD in the original 2011 Kronos. This was a 30 GB, with about 27GB useful storage. I have stopped adding any files to my small factory SSD. The ' free space ' on it has gone wacky and it never seems to change from " 2.1 GB". free.

Do you really expect a server grade or industrial-grade flash drive in 2015 Kronos ?

I do not. I guess is just an ordinary Consumer-grade SSD.

My small gripe in 2011 was mostly the size SSD Korg chose for factory. It seemed minimal for growth and it was in fact , minimal.

It's worth to mention that Kronos is in fact "cost-cutting" OASYS.

First of all , subtract 5% of nominal SSD capacity (system preserve space) , so if an 62GB SSD , then available capacity is 59Gb.
- System SSD consist of 4 Linux EXt2-3 partitions , in the last one Ext3 partition there is a folder called HD and the only folder you can see.
- If you have uninstalled K2 default installed EXs 17 & 18 then all the rest PCM data of EXs 1-9 and INT Rom are present in your SSD hidden
partition Ext3 and actually you can never uninstall them since you don't have the access !
- OS loading occurs only in Ram and system SSD size is not altered via booting or factory streaming function , data already exist in SSD.
- Hidden INT , EXs 1-9 PCM data files plus system files of all Linux partitions have approximately a size of 14Gb.
- Your current free size of your system SSD is real capacity minus 14Gb.

BTW : when controller of SSD/flash memory finds a corrupted sector , it copies the entire sectors group in another location and this page
of KBs in not used anymore as a faulty area of cells , when this process is taking place many times over usage time , then Yes SSD is loosing
storage capacity over time and some SSD diagnostic utilities can read all failure records of SSD and find how deep is the damage over the time !
An SSD can completely fail anytime with zero recovering options even in deep level since driver will be burned , unlike Magnetic disks that are
still the most reliable and secure media for backing up important files if you refresh their sectors once a year !

Hope this helps

Thank you very much you all.
I did a complete format and reinstall from DVD as Poseidon suggested but the result was : 31 gb free (with facttory sounds)

AnthonySharman : thanks for all these informations, many things I didn't know.
Parhaps you can answer to this question : is it possible to install the Kronos system on another new formatted SSD directly from DVDs without cloning the original SSD (I guess cloning SSD will clone bad sectors too ?)
Thank you.

Thank you.

- As first when cloning a working SSD even in sector by sector mode , you can't copy a faulty cell's logic state since the result will be always
either "1" nor "0" so don't worry about it.
Bad sector is defined as an unknown logic state cell and SSD driver has already erased this cell from SSD directory so actually it does not exist.
- Yes you can install DVD's in a brand new bigger and faster SSD.
- The major advantage of cloning SSD (easier via docking station) , is that you do not need re-authorization and you retain unique hardware alignments
of specific keyboard like AT, keybed velocity curve as was set by Korg CE pass in their labs , DVDs contain just an average alignment / calibration of these values.

Also note that using official K2 DVDs you have reinstalled EXs 17 & 18 , that's why free spaced is reduced by 10 Gb !

Hope this helps

Thank you very much.

So, I just tried to install on 250 gb SSD from DVD's. First it did a partition, then begin to format. Unfortunately, format got stucked after few minutes and never ended process. I've attempt several times but the process stoped always at the same moment.

So, once more, I've reinstalled my first SSD !!

At the moment, I don't get a docking station. But I will try the cloning method.
