Steven is my favorite song writer. If you are interested in how his creative mind works, his approach, you will enjoy this YT.
The lady conducting the interview is also a song writer. _________________ Kronos 88. MODX8

20 + yrs ago I was reading a thread on writing hit pop songs on a midi forum.
It seemed they believed the whole process could be reduced to an algorithm.
they believed the computer could create, given sufficient musical rules.
I disagreed, still do, that it can be reduced to an intellectual formula.
Anyone familiar with godels incompleteness would recognize the folly of that approach, its doomed to fail.
The greatest music always seems to contain a catchy and simple basic melody, even classical like tchykovsky concerto #1 , it can be recognized if played with one finger.
I've listened to a few composers talk , bottom line is they don't know how they do it and they don't know where it comes from.
They say they just feel it or inspiration, they let it flow rather than try to force it. The mind is our interface with the infinite and what the infinite brings to us is far better than anything we could invent by brute force of the self will.
In response to the interview above, I would add a reduction of ego helps a lot with creativity, the guy being interviewed reinforces that, he is more humble than I would be in his chair. _________________ if they start to push your buttons...

good post.
1 word term for the creative force, can be called the Muse. This is how it works from my experience.
Components of the human body work together.
Heart and soul work together to provide the premise of a new song. Such as the title or the mood/emotion that is portrayed. Melody [ and lyrical phrases] can originate in chord work or a phrase. Call this the initial spark of the new song.
Our gut and heart provides rhythm. Rhythm combined, with tempo as drums and bass. This is elemental, as its felt physically.
The role of the brain is to coordinate the above and add structure, similar to writing and organizing a book. The brain acts as a 'manager. The brain accepts and rejects musical ideas that work or not work. Structure is the melody/lyric, intro, verse, chorus, and ending.
These 3 components work independently and later at the same time. At some point in time, the brain works with the heart and gut and decides if the song and premise are a worthy experiment . If so, rough edges are solved and the finishing touches
are applied.
When I explained the Muse and components to some musicians, some say.. " that is a bunch of bull sh%$".
And that's fine. I didn't expound on technique , what guitar FX to use, what gear you like, tablature/notation, time signature, or software, mixing, etc etc.
When I explained the Muse and components to non musicians, they shake their heads as if I was crazy, talking gibberish. That reaction doesn't bother me. _________________ Kronos 88. MODX8

Yeh I've heard the muse on your soundcloud tracs.
Its undefinable , Jung said "humans are more than intellect, emotions and $2 worth of chemicals". Theres something more which can't be quantified.
" role of the brain is to coordinate the above and add structure,"
reminds me of physicist Roger Penrose description of consciousness as orchestrated objective reduction.
I find descriptions that satisfy me but it rarely illuminates for others.
Those who know need no explanations. _________________ if they start to push your buttons...

Thanks for listening to my tracks.
I prefer SoundCloud for what I do. They are a German co, do a good job. I am getting an understanding of their listeners and their artists. _________________ Kronos 88. MODX8

Very cool you dug up my topic from last March.
SW is excellent at defining the big picture of his art, and the complex state of the music industry.
I have listened to his many interviews and agree with his articulate observations.
Did you hear about his ' remix contest ' on his "Personal Shopper " ?
I did my version of Personal Shopper for the contest[on my Soundcloud].
SW did not select my work, and that's ok. It was great to have the opportunity to work with SW's audio tracks. _________________ Kronos 88. MODX8
