Joystick is another modulation source. It doesn't replace aftertouch. Thanks to aftertouch, you can modulate sounds keeping both hands free.
Plus, most of the brands provide aftertouch on their new synths (even "little" synths) (Yamaha, Roland, Sequential, Moog, Behringer, Studiologic ...). ASM Hydrasynth gets a Polyphonic AT. the new Modal Argon 8, Cobalt 8 (600 € !!), Novation Summit, Waldorf, Arturia etc...Except Korg !!
In 70s, aftertouch was very rare (Yamaha CS80 only). So we can't say it's a 70s style of playing !!
Anyway, aftertouch is not a "style of playing" ! It's a very convenient source of modulation which adds expressivity. It's particulary true in Combination, playing pad on left hand and lead sound on right hand, for example.
That's the reason why my advice to our friend is not to go for a Nautilus but rather for a Kronos (if he wants Korg). |
