Post by aliersin »

I heard that it's possible to instal a 40 Gb HDD for KORG PA-50.Is that true ?
Could be any problems with the keyboard after instalations ?

I have just installed HDD 41.3 Gb IBM HDD to my Korg PA50! Motherboard must be re-configured (I mean some electronic work must be done) and new OS must be loaded (PA80 software).

It works fine.

The procedure is too complicated to be understood by anyone. I still need to make electronic schemes for changing the motherboard... Work cannot be done by someone who sees electronic board for the first time...

My Background is electronic & computer engineering, and I sometimes work my self to repair my pc and my notebook, so motherboard is not old stuff for me. But, it was long time ago, and frankly I never open up the PA50. But, after I know that its possible to add HD or USB, I'm very interested to do it. So pls... pls tell me.
Thank you very much Mr. Mustang.

What on earth could you possibly fill that 40GB with ?? There's not enough stlyes, programs or midi files on the planet to fill that amount of space....
They are a lot cheaper and easier to find than a 10 or 20 GB tho' - I'll give you that LOL

It's not just a matter of soldering some wire to add HDD interface to the board. The OS on the PA-50 must also be modified to recognize the ATA HDD and contain "driver" to work with it. And how about the menu to select HDD on top of the FD that already exist !!! All contained in the OS.
This is a hardware AND software job. You can't modify the software unless you have the SOURCE code and the tool to compile / link, etc...
In this forum, someone seems to have done all this.

Instead of HDD, I prefer USB flash memory, they are cheap these days and are much more robust and even 128MB is plenty for storing everything I want. I am willing to use even 2GB flash.

I guess after all the soldering works, you could do an OS update using PA-80 OS instead of PA-50 OS.
That must be the trick.

Why do you think you need a "40" GB HD. Do you need a truck
to carry a goldfish?
Go with a 6GB thats much more than ever needed.
6GB is space enaugh for aro. 100000 MIDIS for ex.

Why 40Gb??

If all the trouble involved, I prefer USB stick with 2 or 2 Gb or even SSD card..

I simply cannot see how it can be done. So much hardware on the board of PA-50 is missing of PA-80..

Better option would be to replace the FDD with SSD reader of some sort.
