Hi all.

Just read this, and follow my instructions.

1: Connect a pair of headphones to your PC, and put them on.
2: Download this file Click Me.
3: Read this.... before you listen to it, what your going to hear is an mp3 of a box of matches been shaken, and that's really cool about this is that not only will you hear the sound coming from in front and behind you. You will actually hear at one point the box of matches been shaken OVER your head, and also down low. Freaky stuff.
4: Start the playback and close your eyes. DO NOT move your head while listening. Sit perfectly still.

That's all.

Well, I hate to say this, but what the heck? How can 2 stereo speakers provide such directional movement. I swear the sound went up and down and sometimes behind me. It seemed to go around my head, across my forehead. Sometimes way down by my feet. What the heck? I thought you needed surround sound to do this.

Great and excellent.
I, my wife and my daughter listened to this super mp3 and we were amazed.They ask me how we can do that? Usually we hear this kind of surround effect in the movie theatre with many speakers.

Lorenzo linked me that file a few months ago, and I think it's coming from Neumann labs, where they build the binaural microphone, witht he modelled human head providing an incredible sense of space and sound positioning...

What about hearing that in mono?
No phase cancellation problems?

I'm completely deaf in my left ear, so it doesn't work so well. I can tell distance, and about 120º of skewed frontal stereo panorama (starting from hard-right and going anti-clockwise), but not vertical height so much. A little, but not much. I can also pick out sounds that seemed to rotate behind the head (about 120º starting from hard-right and going clockwise, so that's basically 240º rotation on the Y-Axis in total that I can roughly discern, although my brain tended to confuse some sounds with distance when instead I think the sound may possibly have been behind me), but certainly I couldn't really relate to any differing positioning up and down on the Y-axis (height) if there was any.

However, I think the scientific process is called HRTF = Head Related Transfer Function. The way the mass of the human head and the outer ears (Pinna) actually filter and phase certain sounds as (or before) it reaches the ears, which this simulates, and the way the human brain responds to those sounds by familiarity.

Hi Guys.

It's called a Holophonic Recording, and as RiotNrrd pointed out. You need to build a binaural microphone to do this. Which I'm going to do.
