Hello,
I was just listening to some Reggaeton (a new genre of Latin music http://www.artistdirect.com/nad/music/artist/ringtones/0,,2588499,00.html ) music and i was wondering is what makes that genre so different? like i know its the drum kit but all of the songs has pretty much the same beat. and i want to know how i can make my own!
thanks!

It seems to be a blend of Reggae, Rap and Hip Hop from what I hear. This is then laid on top of what I call an uptempo "Cumbia" beat in 2/4 time. First time I have heard this and actually, I like it. Seems like it would be great club dance music. Que no?

I have long known Cumbia(s) since living for a while in Bogota, Colombia
(it is often very basic percussion, bass, accordion and some wild rough singing, they
play it in the supermarkets, at least in the 80's).
To get some of the basic beats Cumbia's use, I have found many
by just googling cumbia + midi. Then you have the midi files to put in the sequencer
and you can check out how they play this.
May not be the same as reggaton, but it is maybe a start (also fun to learn about
rhytm;s used in 'ethnic' music).

I was there in the late 70's, early 80's, the lawless days of pablo escobar
and it was one hell of a scary place. I hear it is better these days,
but still a violent country. Unless you know locals that can tell you where you can go and where you may die, you'd better be careful. And avoid the
cops.
Better do your homework,
maybe the lonely planet guide to south america can tell you were it is
safe these days, I really don't know, haven't been back in a long time.
The music is great though and so are most people, it is just a very
violent country. Enjoy!

Yeah I know a bit about Colombia. People have told me that it has changed a ton in the last couple of years. Some actually say its one of the safest countries because of the extreme violence. Like they overly made it safe to compensate for violence. Thats just what i've heard!
