Could someone straighten me out on how the effects are routed in the sequencer? Am I right in saying you can only have IFX OR MFX on a sound, not both?

Yes, you can have both.
With an IFX on, adjust the Send 1 level to 127.
With an MFX on, adjust the Return 1 level.

Someone correctly if I'm wrong, but MFX means Master Effects and impacts the entire patch; or the overall mix. IFX allows you to channel individual effects into other effects for daisy chaining the sounds. Thus, both types of effects are applied to the overall sound/patch.

Nope, that's what Total Effect (TFX) is.
Master Effect is a send/return kind.
