Using padKontrol to both DAW and MacBook?

I figured out that the padKontrol's MIDI ports are used as an interface when it is plugged into the computer via USB. What if I want to use padKontrol both on the MacBook and my DAW? Do I plug in my DAW into the padKontrol's MIDI interface and try to set it up in Audio MIDI on my MacBook? I've never used that utility before for the MIDI side of things.
