This is the first tune I've written on a 'groovebox' in a long, long time. I recently got a Korg EMX-1, and have been having loads of fun writing using nothing but hardware again for a change. While I did some arranging in Live 7, everything else is straight from the EMX with no additional sequencing or processing (efx, EQ, etc). Anyway, enjoy the downtempo:

Thanks, I have to say I was really surprised at the quality of the drums in the EMX. They hold their own quite well, even considering it's been out some time now. Too bad you can't run them through the filter section though Sad

wow! I like. That sitar sound is unusual. I haven't heard on any other emx songs posted. The open hat sound is nice too. Most of the other emx songs i've checked out, I didn't like the hat sounds at all. Congas sound good too.

I'm impressed.

You can run the drums through the filters if you select them under pcm sounds, they're at the end Wink

But then I'd lose the synth parts in the process, no? Since the synth parts would be taken up with the drums then?

takerith!
welcome to the forum, man!

i´m very happy to see you here and very happy to see you enjoying your EMX

that track sounds great!, really inspired and different from the usual and more inmediat EMX material...

did you retube your electribe?, if not check the extensive discussion and examples about that issue here:

http://www.korgforums.com/forum/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=31647

PS: I think you have to upload that track to the elektron forum as well (they ussually avoid the electribes as the plague... Wink...I have both tribes and elektron boxes and I really happy with all of them...no conflicts at all, just music and fun

My JJ EC83s's arrived yesterday actually. I plan on swapping them in tonight, and recording some before and after examples in case any one I'd curious about the difference it makes.

Not sure what I can say really, I just tweak it until it sounds right to me. The key is just getting the drums balanced right, and then making sure the bassline is sitting just so, not clashing with the kick. Too bad there's no way to sysex just one pattern in the EMX, I'd be more than happy to upload it for people to check out. Otherwise this is all just straight from the EMX, no other effects or processing at all.

No, it's just a pattern, which I arranged in Ableton Live. I create the pattern first as if I was going to play it live, so it's more or less completely finished except for the song structure. I record 8 bar loops for the drums into Live, while the synths are done more or less in one pass as I tweak the parameters to give it more variety.
