Here it is at last, sorry I'm a bit late.
An orchestral one this month, all done on the Trusty Triton...

This has a mysterious feel to it. Love your use of string sounds...and the variety! Very smooth chord changes: at first seemingly predictable, then you take us someplace else. Wonderful!
I must admit though...the first half of the song is more powerful than the second half to me. That is not a bad thing because I think that may be part of the contrast you are after with the theme.
All the levels feel right and the song is just lovely!
I noticed you mentioned the Triton. I do hope Protools is not beating you up too much... I might have to come over and kick it's @$$!

Hi Jon
Thanks for listening and for all the positive comments. "All the levels feel right....".....mmmm.....are you just being nice ? Sure there's nothing to chew on here?
Yes I decided to give PT a rest for a while and get on with writing some music instead.
Will try to do something using PT for June...
And thanks for the offer to kick it's #@#@! Will let you know if this is required at any stage, even if it's just a cyber-kick.

Hi Dee!!
What a nice song....Lots of ..it's true...Mysterious feeling....very emotional to me...
I agree, there is little to be done production wise...but ...what would I know about such...I am from the old ( as in "Ancient..") school of recording with ""real" to reel" and anything better than 8 trk tape is new age for me......
Love (LOVE!!), the neat change in the "middle"? roughly with the fingered piano and the strings really singing...GREAT SOUND!!
This wins awards....for being better....well than any of mine....(cause somebody thought about some classic continuity...instead if just poundin' on the keys..)!!!
My Best Regards!! Johnny (ellll) |

I really like this too, Dee. I'm so glad you're pushing yourself to produce music and learn your gear to support your musical journey. I just love your approach to combining piano with the others sounds esp the strings, very smooth and beautiful. I'm wondering if the ending should stay as is, or if it would benefit from a string pad coming back in for the the last 30 seconds or so, it would be intersting to hear as you did somewhat repeating the intro portion only with a new take on it like that. Not sure if it would work. But thematically, if you're going for the helpless feeling, the end does capture that IMHO. Very nice, and don't feel you have to re-work these just because people suggest it. It's your thing. and you have much to learn with all that new stuff. That may even be the more advantageous route at this point. Wish me luck, I just ordered the m3, so now begins my learning curve, though I don't think this will be nearly as bad as my first korg (the TS that was a 6 month nightmare). So nice to hear your piece. Thank you for posting it. I must go now and listen again. _________________ George Nelson is 2loose

No I am not just being nice. There may be a little to chew on here, however several things really stood out to me. One thing that I "felt" with this piece was- less editing.
Whether it was edited or not, the piece (and individual parts) sounds as if you played it straight. And that is important in making for a convincing song.
And your sound choices made for a very clean arrangement.

What a great sound,
After listening to mine, I think the production sounds refreshingly natural.
Love the track itself too, I was thinking of a film score, it has so many emotional peaks and troughs.
This piece has character, and I love the arrangement. _________________ Chordial |

Hi Guys
Thanks for the comments Johnny....better than yours??... ...No Way!!!
And George I'm sure that learning the M3 will be a snitch for you if you understand the TS. I saw a website selling a DVD called "Learn the korg M3 in 5 hours" ........there you are! that's all you need!.......
Good ideas there about the string pad at the end.....on the other hand, I thought the sparsity (sparcity??) of the arrangement suited the title better.
Thanks for listening, Stephen and Simon - and for the positive comments about the strings. I'm trying to get them to play like real string players, and not just "background" music.
Hi Jon, I know that you're waiting for me to post a song done with pro tools! Well, that's the intention for June. Roll on, June! EEK it's June already .....how did that happen........

Hi Dee,
Wow - what a feel you've captured here. Is there story behind the name / this tune?
I thought that hesitant timing approach was done very well - created a nice ebb and flow - breaths along - but with such intense emotional chords. Yes - love the middle section - I can see people dancing around on stage for this section (I've never been to a ballet). The breaks were a nice touch.
I listened a few times - I've been doing that for every tune actually - with such a diverse, talented, creative group here - there a lot of brain food Anyways - I think I am going to share this tune w/my uncle - I would be interested to know what he thinks. I won't tell him who the composer is and lets see what he says

Oh my God, Dee, this is top quality!!!
I love it, gave it a lot of listens, I'm thinking about using it as a soundtrack: amazing!!!
It should work perfectly!
I prefer the first part, pizzicato strings, and these harmony changes really likes me a lot!
Just a quick note: I would record these instruments dry, then process them togheter, they sounds to my ears they're not in the same room, maybe they have two different reverbs, but you should give the idea of being near each other.
Once again, I love the tune, it's very very very good!!! _________________ Diego http://www.myspace.com/diegoinmusic

Awesome strings and feel. You have tremendous feel for the use of strings. At about 1:30, I almost fall out of my chair. You lead us in so easily and then hit us with such power. Correct me if I am wrong, but weren't you the one who lamented about not having more emotion. Wow, you have great depth in this piece.
I think a lot of us reuse the same old strings throughout a piece but you are never static. You really evolve this piece with the way the strings are played. I can't imagine what you would have done with more orchestral instruments. I can't comment much on learning new software or hardware because I am a Neanderthal in that department, but you really nail this whole piece. The feel and the journey are perfect! Thanks! _________________ “I’m into scales right now.”

Hi Dr Who
Thanks for your very positive comments, especially about there being more ebb and flow. Can't help wondering what your uncle said...
Hi Diego
A soundtrack??!!! Tell me more about this! And thank you so much for the very kind comments. I will try and see what you mean about the reverb effect....they all use the same kind of reverb.....so I"m not sure what is causing it to sound like that.
Hi Jazlover
Well, I'm very pleased to read that you liked it so much - I was trying to write more realistically for the strings and there's still a long way to go in that department!
Thanks everyone for listening and for the very good and encouraging comments - it means a lot to me!!

Dee

Hi Johnny
Good to hear from you again - and thanks for the comments.
Will keep trying in the orchestral department, and maybe venture into other sections next. Love the horns you use. It's so tricky getting woodwinds or brass to blend naturally. Strings are easy in comparison!
