EM-1 is loaded with (non changeable) samples of drums, as well as some synth waveforms, meaning you can have it play drums and one (or is it two) synth parts at once.

the ER-1 has four parts of freely assignable drum synthesis, meaning you sculpt your own sound from scratch, plus 4 non-changeable sampes (open and closed hat, crash and cybmal). don't expect to get very realistic sounding drums from the ER.

for a more detailed explanation, check out theese:

Em-1 has more FX to process its rompler sounds, but also loses the audio in feature. Also, you can pitch the drum sounds high or low speed giving you a bit of flexibility even if it is sample based.

ER-1 can do weird R2D2 chirps or squigels if you experiment with the knobs for a bit. So you can always make your drum sounds as electronic as your tastes go. Buuuut, it just can't pull off acoustic kits that well. That's why a ES-1/ESX comes in handy!
