I have been wanting to get into sampling and sampled music for a while now, but I was wondering if this is a good instrument for a beginner? I was particularly attracted by the keyboard. I play the piano so for a keyboard to be present would help with overcoming the steep learning curve.
Price is a concern. I would also like to be able to use this instrument even when I am more experienced.
The music I make will be pretty melodic, not so much hip-hop as psych pop. My favorite musicians are Panda Bear and Animal Collective, if that helps out at all. |

It's a fairly versatile piece of hardware, easy to understand, and worth the price if you ask me. You can easily use it as an ambient sound instrument with the FX and it has a simple pattern sequencer. You can control it with other MIDI devices you already have (or with a computer via USB). It also makes it easy to save and catalog samples you've recorded on the MS onto the computer. It's my second major sampler in the past 8 years, but has become the main one in my studio (first was a Boss SP-505 which is also a powerful beginner level hardware sampler/sequencer). Honestly though, it was a tough decision for me between the MS and the Boss SP-555, which is about $100 more...glad of the decision I made for sure. Check out some of my videos if you have some time. Peace.
