What do professionals do to get the perfect voice out of a singer? Obviously pitch correction and EQ is used, but what else can help make your voice artificially perfect? _________________ Current: MS-20 Mini, Minilogue, SY77

Trouble is - perfection cant come artificially. The room and mic choice is very very important. A decent vocal recording should have almost no eq apart from taking off all the bottom end, maybe below 100hz. Harmonic exciters are often used to get that creamy sounding top-end. Compression, and limiting to keep the dynamics in check. Multiband compression as well is pretty useful on occasion. Other than that, if it don't sound good - get them to do it again until it is perfect!
Top end gear is a world apart from home recording. It's possible to get 75% of the way there very easily, but impossible to come close to all those pre-amps, valve compressors, expensive mics etc etc. |
