It's getting hard for me to understand what your problems seems to be.

First of all, if you have other tracks with audio clips or virtual synths on the ProTools, and you wanna be able to hear them AND the ESX, you should connect the ESX and the soundcard to a mixer to hear them both.

Or, another option, is to connect the ESX to the audio inputs of your soundcard. If you have a more or less good soundcard you should be able to listen to the ESX with almost no latency.

Is this what you are talking about?

Kind of. I want to be able to hear the ESX while pro tools plays the midi track. Is it possible to have the midi notes trigger the ESX (would synchronizing the midi clock do this)? So say i have nothing recorded on the ESX. I create a midi note on C1 in pro tools and the snare on my ESX is set at C1. Can i play the midi track and hear the snare play back on the ESX without triggering the ESX? Hopefully that makes more sense.

Off course! That's the whole idea of this!

How can you compose on the computer if you can't hear the sounds you are using? If you draw a C1 or any note on the Pro Tools and press play it should trigger the ESX part that corresponds. What you are doing is: sequencing the ESX. Instead of using the onboard sequencer of the ESX , you use Pro Tools.

That's what i'm having trouble with. It's not triggering the esx.
