Should there be a "new" Kaoss Pad?

Yes! The KP3 seems limiting

"Kaoss Infinite"

Post by AkashicRecords »

Dear Korg,

I am wondering if there are Korg developers who are interested in developing ideas for new Kaoss instruments? I would be interested in developing and doing video reviews in exchange for sponsorship as an artist. Anyways...

I am working on a platform for the next generation of Kaoss pad, now that the KP3 seems to be "old news" for a lot of minimalist / techno producers. At least, for me...

I have been doing glitch experiments with the KP3. I have midi step-sequenced the effects switch knob successfully, enabling up to 40,000 effects to be switched per second.

If we can attach a variable LFO to the KP3's effects selector state, maybe there can be onboard glitching. If we can do this, maybe we can approximate multiple effects at once?

I would LOVE for the KP3 to be able to do multiple effects at once.

Lets mash on some ideas for the "Kaoss Infinite"! Here are a few I would like to add:

*Tube / Tape / DigiTalk / Disto resampling (adjustable by knob). This way sparkle, crunchyness, bias, and roundness are applied very easily and in real-time. All minimal producers need to make things sound like they've gone thru lots of dirty systems at-once.

*More sampler loops! Also, maybe a way to "bump" loops in real time so that their start and ends can be more precisely matched? Its a real pain trying to get everything to sync via midi without good mergers and splitters (especially with older Korg boxen like my favorite, the EM-1).

*1/4" or XLR inputs and outputs: come on Korg! Lets make our Kaoss HOT!

*Automatic feedback switch: you know what this is for: those strange, ambient-on-cassette-tape sessions. Add some weirdness to the mix with the flick of a switch.

Here is a minimal KP3 only jam:

You definitely have some great ideas, but addressing this to Korg will do no good.

Kashic -- thanks for the effort, and welcome. While it might be worthwhile to do your poll, as Aciphex hints Korg almost certainly will not see it if you just leave it here on the forum. You'll want to take your results and send it to them directly in some fashion.

Back when the KPro first came out, one of their reps visited this forum frequently. I haven't seen him post since and have have no idea if he's still working for Korg, but you might try PM'ing Rich Formidoni, he kicked off this thread: http://www.korgforums.com/forum/phpBB2/ ... hp?t=49497 And I'd start looking for other ways to reach them as well.

For what it's worth though, Aciphex's sentiments are shared by many around here: Korg is a company that has had some brilliant ideas and has done a great deal for producers on a budget, but lately they've been lousy at supporting their old groove-oriented products and developing new ones. (For example, they could be making an absolute killing if they produced a next-generation Electribe, but all they've done is "upgrade" the memory card type the EMX/ESX series uses.)

If you take this further, I'd also recommend cruising through past threads. Members come up with good ideas for a next-generation Kaoss Pad fairly often and you might want to incorporate these into your message.

BTW, really digging your Space House jam. Reminds me of CTTE-era Hawtin in places. Did you manage to produce all these sounds with your hotrodded KP3 alone, or are you manipulating loops created with other gear?

Hey guys, thanks for the feedback. I have tried to get messages across to Korg before about my ideas. Posting here was my last resort.

Yes the space jam I used KP3 only :)

I dunno how exactly all that came out of a kp3, but it magically did lol

So, I guess now I need to find a Korg press person or someone like that?

@Kashic -- For what it's worth, I noticed Rich Formidoni just posted to this thread http://www.korgforums.com/forum/phpBB2/ ... hp?t=56253 so he still works at Korg.
