Concerning headphones: those mentioned are fine, but I am extremely happy with my AKG K702. They let me hear things to a degree of precision, which I don't hear even on great nearfields or on other headphones. |

Whatever great monitors you get, bone up on room acoustics, esp. if you're trying to do mixes that will translate well to other systems. Near field speakers (within 3 feet or so of listener) helps a great deal, but as you move past 5-6" woofers, the room starts to be excited more and more.
Good speaker placement and appropriate speaker size relative to the room helps a lot, and then there are bass traps and other room treatments that can help as well as you push the size/volume of your speakers. |

Oh well as far as the room is concerned I am really in deep mud.
We are moving to our new house in which I will have a very big studio which is of a perfect rectangular shape, the dream of a Fourier analyst.
On the other hand, I am not a professional, I am just looking for having back the fun I use to have when I was playing 20 years ago.
BTW tomorrow afternoon I am going to see th Kronos demoed at my local shop (I leave in Verona, Italy). Will post my impressions when back.
Till then,
Dan |

I was looking at the KRK10s sub, you haven't had any problems with the Behringer B2092A Sub? It is less expensive the the KRK sub and the Kronos isn't cheap, at least form my POV so it is a good option if reliable. |

Not Sold, not available around here, product has been discontinued. Crap!
Any other sub suggestions? 400 is about my limit, maybe I should build a cab myself. |

If you can somehow afford them, the Genelec 8040A are fantastic monitors. I bought a pair and was absolutely broke the following couple of months, but boy am I content today! I also enjoyed the sound of KRK, but Genelec won out for me. |

I am interested in this topic; looking for some speakers with a budget of about $600. I'm not planning to do any serious recording, so just looking for speakers I can jam with, with sound that can fill a living room. My fear is that if I go for a pair of studio monitors like the Yamaha HS-80m's or KRK's, the sound will be flat and without much definition, which is great for recording, but not so much for playing. So, not really what I'm looking for. Of course, a solution would be just to use headphones, but I'd like to be able to play for others as well when friends (and chicks) come over
Any suggestions? |

If you want to play for the chicks, perhaps you should just use a car stereo system with a massive sub?
Seriously, once you get used to flat response, giving you a realistic picture of the sound, you will regard anything else as inferior. At least that is how nearfields and studio headphones changed my perception.
Whenever I listen to "pleasant" speakers now, I have the feeling that a pot of vanilla sauce fell down on the sound and spoiled everything. Sweet, but viscious. |
