I have had no issues using my MacBook Pro live. I have it set up with all the pianos organs and synths I need - it sounds great and performs flawlessly night after night. I've not had a crash in MainStage, Logic, or GarageBand since adding (and updating) the MBP to my stage kit years ago.

Of course I haven't played a Kronos yet, but I don't see - based on the demos I've heard - how Kronos could improve on the sonic quality and variety I am able to produce in performance.

Regardless of the venue, the sound guys are always impressed by the huge sound that comes out of my relatively compact setup. Just last night I did a gig with only the MBP, a MicroStation to control it and my Godins in a big bar with a great sound system. Brian the sound man was blown away. We did an Apocalypse Now kinda intro with Pianoteq and Omnisphere, and 'ol Brian was all smiles and thumbs up Smile Probably buzzed too though, to be fair.

No SSD, but that's not been an issue at all.

Having said that, I do always keep a Motif XS (and an extra amp) in the car as a backup, because it's never a matter of if a HD will fail, it's just a matter of when.

So far so good though. Oh and yes Peter, as always, has welcome words of wisdom on computer performance "insurance"... thanks, man!

Smile

Two world tours and tons of live TV performances using computers for playback of pre-records instills in one a healthy paranoia of computers and everything connected to them. Why say "oops" when you can say "UPS"? Laughing

But ... there are drawbacks.
For once, there are issues with the reliability of MainStage2, so I am still stuck with the older MainStage1. Apple knows about the specific problem, but it hasn't been fixed yet, and the kind of support they offer may be OK for things like iTunes or iMovie, but for professional software like MS it is definitely substandard. Also, it is in the nature of open systems like AU or VST that certain problems may arise where no-one takes responsibility: The manufacturer of the host application blames it on the third-party plugin manufacturer, who in turn blames it on the driver for the audio interface ... you get the idea.

Taking all this into account, I find that despite all the theoretical power which an open system like MainStage can provide, a "closed" and integrated system which simply just works does have a strong appeal.
So after more than five years of using software on stage, I have finally decided that I will migrate back to a pure hardware solution within this year. Kronos is a major candidate. (I will thoroughly check it out at Musikmesse tomorrow.)

THANKYOU!!! Very Happy I thought I was the only one who's experiencing issues with Mainstage.... it's a REAL shame as the potential is fantastic.

I've ended up using Mainstage as the main performance tool, with my XP30 & K2000 (samples & edited sounds - copying what I've got in Mainstage) as the backup plan.

And I've had to use the "backup" once so far. Kind of wipes out any confidence in the application IMHO Sad

Shame.

So, no Mainstage is NOT a viable option to replace the Kronos IMHO.

I was unaware that Korg had released some of my most favorite synthesizers - Polysix, Mono/Poly, Wavestation as AU.

Now, consider a Macintosh with an SSD running Mainstage. Assuming you could protect it from the elements enough to use, would that be a viable contender to the Kronos? Not so much as a sequencer type machine, but for live performances.

Yes, you could do this, but of course you would still need a keyboard and an easy way to select sounds.

You would definitely want to do what others have recommended:
-- have a backup system in place
-- make sure the system is protected
-- have a Universal Power Supply
