While waiting on the Kronos, I've been reading the manuals and learning all I can about my new toy without it actually being here. Just for fun, I decided to look for the original Polysix manual from 1981. A quick Google search had it on my iPad. Reading that manual sent me down memory lane for sure. I never had a Polysix, but did spend some time with cassette tape recorders attached to computers for backup purposes!

Here are some interesting stats about the Polysix:

Manual: 24 pages, 200KB (Kronos 3 manuals, 1683 pages, 63.5MB)
Voices: 6
User programs: 4 banks of 8 (32 total)
External storage: Cassette Interface
Keys: 61
Weight: 25.6 lbs. (Kronos 61: 28 lbs)

I thought these were interesting as a marker of change in the past 30 years.

Chris

yes, it is an interesting perspective for sure.

Here's some other perspective:

30 years from now, somebody will be directly scanning the Kronos manual (all of its 1683 pages) trough a retina-to-brain wireless interface (I have no idea what the two most fashionable brand names will be in 30 years, replacing Goggle and iPad),

and will sigh...

... "I never played a Kronos, but the idea that it took just 6 months to read its manual surely gives you pause... How things have changed, now that the 36-volumes manual of the 36000-voices polyphonic Korg Mohammed has been released".

[obviously, Greek mythological references will have lost their appeal by then, and keyboards wil be named after South-Mediterranean mythologies].

Thinking outside the box has its advantages.

And its disadvantages.

Oh: in the meantime, a 60-years old, 6 voices analogue Korg Polysix will be still kicking ass.

I remember seeing it in a music store and being around $2000. That was still way in the stratosphere for me at that age and time, so it was inconceivable to own one. A couple years later I was drooling over the Poly61, and even though that was a lot cheaper at around $1100, I still couldn't come close to affording that either, lol.

"$1,100.00 in 1981 had the same buying power as $2,793.71 in 2011." according to http://www.dollartimes.com/calculators/inflation.htm

"$2,000.00 in 1981 had the same buying power as $5,079.47 in 2011."

just puts things in perspective... $3,000 for a keyboard workstation isn't bad at all

The Polysix was my first ever synth, bought it 1986 For around What was £350 UK sterling IIRC...and then part ex'd it for an M1 in 1989 then for an 01Wfd etc, added a Wavestation EX,then things got out of hand Laughing ...been a Korg Lover ever since, and probably had and sold on just about most synth's they've made since then.Sadly the Kronos won't be included in that list..(The Oasys is enough)...Unless they make a Kronos rackmount! Actually here is the progress...

Polysix number of pages in manual is 24
Kronos number of pages in manual is zero Smile

Much of Kronos features was available on separate instruments, and even in Analogue form (better?). You had DS-8 for VPM. M1 sample playback workstation features, Wavestation vector synthesis. Polysix and MS-20 for analogue. Organs, pianos. Kronos puts it all into one package in a digital form. Which makes it more usable, better (polyphony), taking less space and integrated with a computer. Awesome!
BUTT! I would rather have the Mono/Poly Over the Polysix. Smile

(piccie snip - guys, don't hotlink to other sites, and delete pics in quotes)

If I won the lottery, I'd definitely get me one of these, a CS-80, a Polymoog and a Moog 55 modular, at least. The last time I saw one of these for sale, the price was frightening.
