I was wondering if anyone has tried the USB audio yet?
While patiently awaiting my delivery, I've been thinking of how I will connect to my computer.
I didn't get any new wires, and thought I will give the USB a go before s/pdif or analog..

I've recorded directly into Logic using nothing more than the USB cable. Just make sure to grab the latest driver from
http://www.korg.com/kronos
in the Support->Drivers section (currently
http://www.korg.com/uploads/Download/KORG_USB-MIDI_Driver_1.1.1_MAC_634382165658020000.zip for Mac
and
http://www.korg.com/uploads/Download/KORG_USB_MIDI_Driver_1.13_r6_PC_634396683078320000.zip for PC).

Enjoy!

My experience with Windows 7 64bit is that I didn't need the drivers at all. In fact, the Korg drivers made the Kronos MIDI inaccessible. Deleting the drivers and using windows standard fixed it.

Audio and MIDI both seem solid. I was able to route to and fro Cubase with no problems.

Thanks synkh, I'm on a Mac and using the Kronos USB driver and my Ensemble as an Aggregate device in OSX.
It's working very nicely, no audio cables. I was going to go S/PDIF, but thought I would try this setup first and glad I did.

The aggregate device is allowing me to use the Ensemble and the Kronos as one audio device in Logic and Live. It sounds great!
The only thing though, is that the Main Volume has no function. I do have control with the Master volume. It just feels a little odd, but I guess that is the way it is going to daw digital?

You mean the Main Volume knob on the KRONOS panel? If so, yes, this is an analog volume control for the analog L/R outputs, if you're using the USB audio into the computer it will not control levels at all.

You could use the "Master" slider on the control surface in Timbre/Track mode to control the levels on the digital side...

Well, I don't see any reason why "Main Volume" knob shouldn't control digital volume as well. To not cause any confusion, it should operate consistently no matter what output I am using. The difference between digital/analog volume control is only internal in Kronos and only worries Korg engineers, for me as user, it is still the same knob that should have the same function.

Using the usb cable I'm able to record audio into Cakewalk 64 on the PC Windows 64.

From the PC though there only seems to be one audio out channel with no stereo option. But this is indeed a stereo output. The tracks play back showing sound is being sent but I just can't hear it thru the Kronos.

And how would I hear this through the Kronos?

Hi Brandon, thanks for the reply.
In regard to the Kronos, yes, exactly. The Master Volume has control and the Main doesn't.
Thanks for clarifying that for me. I was thinking maybe my Aggregate device setup wasn't quiet right.

Would love to hear your opinion of USB audio as opposed to S/PDIF, for recording/playback to daw?
Is usb as good?

Glad to hear that the aggregate device is working Cool

The main volume is a control of analogue circuit/output - not surprising at all that it doesn't control digital at all imho.

I'm unaware of any synthesizer workstation in which the main volume control had any internal digital control whatsoever. Maybe the Motif XF or Jupiter-80 does, but I'm doubtful.

I've never had any issue when controlling any instrument's volume from within a sequencer or DAW, but I had to take the time to do it, the same as any function on any piece of software.

@Lou: Glad to help out! I used to have a mammoth aggregate MIDI/audio device for my Logic setup with 2 firewire mixers + my Alesis Photon + Triton Extreme's S/PDIF for audio and the Alesis Photon, Triton Extreme, 2 M-Audio 4x4 and 1 2x2 USB MIDI boxes for MIDI. It was awesome because just about everything in the studio had its own separate MIDI bus and audio input(s) (very handy when dealing with a lot of outboard gear with multiple outs like the Virus, Nord Lead and MPC-1000).
I'm also glad to hear you got to the bottom of the master volume issue. I just tend to use CC#7 and/or let my DAW deal with the master. I've found that it's actually more handy to have the master (analog) volume left alone since everything then shows up in the DAW at a consistent volume rather than me having to trim it just right every time. I say let the MIDI CC's and/or DAW settings take care of that aspect and let me deal just with auditioning!

Happy recording!

what's going to be cool is that we can sample any audio from the computer to kronos thru USB.

Thanks cynkh,

You mention that you have included a 2x2 USB midi into the aggregate?

I have just one piece missing to my setup. I have a VoiceLive 2 in the setup, which is hooked to the computer usb and a midi cable from Kronos out to it.
I can't get it to receive midi on track playback of Kronos from daw, which then provides harmony when doing a vocal track, .. I haven't included the VL2 in the aggregate.
I thought the aggregate was only for audio devices? Could it be I'm not getting midi to it because of that? Hope that was clear.
