I hope never. In our times of reduce/reuse/recycle when I and my family and friends put significant effort on managing our personal waste streams and reducing our effect on the global waste stream, I find this sort of thing repugnant. That is my opinion.

Perhaps this sort of behavior was original when The Who did it the first time, but now it is just copycats.

Actually I think it's having not respect for a musical instrument, and I don't mind if it's a guitar or synth or whatever.

Breaking a music instrument has nothing to do with being a musician, it's only for making show, and if I see a band destroying their own instrument I would leave immediately.

Here is an excellent idea from Major League Baseball: MLB is asking fans to donate gloves for use by inner city youth leagues. In exchange you get free tickets to a game and autographs. The gloves go to kids who can learn and play the game and possibly realize a dream.

In the United States, there is an effort to reduce the funding for the arts in public schools. This is simply reprehensible. But, instead of glorying in the trashing of instruments, why not consider donating used instruments to schools? It's good (pardon the pun) karma, and for you tax worriers, the donation is tax deductible.

Ahimsa,
Vlad

Some bands like NIN buy new boards or controllers for the specific purpose of trashing them on stage.

I always support our local school music programs and have kids going through them right now, but I could definitely do a better job at making contributions. I sold a lot of band candy and wrapping paper in my younger days. If neither of my younger two kids have an interest in my two saxophones (kid number one is doing piano and drums/percussion) then I will definitely donate them to the schools if they will take them- that is a great idea. I might have to donate some money to have them restored, like new pads on the saxes and new mouth pieces, but that is not really all that much in comparison with the price of a new instrument.

I remember reading somewhere that during the mid 90's, if you turned up at a NIN gig with a DX7, they'd give you free tickets for that night's show and $200 (they kept your DX7 for, er, restoration purposes!)

Just as an aside, Vlad, America is technically bankrupt. The only reason we haven't gone into a 1930s level depression is because of borrowing from our friends in Japan, and those Chinese characters, as well as a few generous countries in Europe.

In all actuality, we're still slinging money around like we have riches, and schools actually still do have arts programs. Scholarships are still going out, and hundreds and probably thousands of kids are wasting the money. We really DO NEED to stop printing money and handing it out to anyone and everyone, and America does need to start living on a budget like a typical family does. And Socialist Insecurity really DOES need to be privatized. I'm a federal bureaucrat, and I know whereof I speak.

Anyway, carry on. Razz

It's a shame. I would kill for anything better than the yamaha kiddie keyboard I have now. I split up all the money I make. 10% to future and 90% to getting a Kronos. If I had that kind of money I still wouldnt disrespect an instrument like that. It's about the music. Rich pricks don't ge that. It's a fad to them.

Anyone that destroys a musical instrument just for fun has never looked into the eyes of a child too poor, or in too difficult a situation to be able to afford an instrument. I was a child like that once. People that destroy for sport upset me.
