This is incorrect. See my next message.

Oh, one more thing. I notice the manual has a number of KGE, PCG, AMS without explanations of what they stand for.

I'd suggest reading the Operation Guide; all of these are explained there.

OK I am totally confused. I see save sampling data which creates a .KSC.

Now this seems to indicate that it will do what I want (and it does) but can anyone explain to my why Save All... doesn't create a .KSC file that saves all the links? It just doesn't make sense to me right now.

It would seem that besides Save All... I still need to choose Save Sampling Data and create a .KSC file to load ahead of time before I load my previously saved Save All files.... (at least I think).

There are two things involved here: saving and loading.

First: Saving. You're absolutely correct, the KSC file saved with "Save All" saves references to RAM files only. I consider this an omission, and I would like to change this in the future (as usual, no promises on that). For now, *if* you have made changes to the set of EXs samples being loaded, you'll need to use Save Sampling Data. I'm sorry for the inconvenience.

Next: Loading. If you're just using a standard set of samples, whether it's the factory preload or your own standard preload (as set up on the Auto-Load KSC page), you can simply leave "Load KSC Too" disabled when you load a PCG or SNG file. The KSC file will be ignored, and your samples will be left unchanged.

If you have some custom RAM samples that you'll be using with the PCG, then load the KSC but make sure that only "Append" or "Clear RAM" are selected; this will leave your EXs samples intact.

Hope this helps,

Dan

Hehehe The FIRST thing I did was search the parameter guide and there's no mention of what AMS stands for. I thought I had searched the OG, but apparently not since it's in the table of contents!

I kept on studying page 190 since it shows the hierarchy of files.

One thing I don't understand the benefit of is separating the .PCG from the .KSC. I suppose it's one level of indirection but what purpose does it serve?

OK I kind of understand how this all works. I was just taken by surprise that's all. I like the fact that the factory folder is locked.

Thanks for the help! I appreciate it!

Look at the last page of the TOC in the Parameter Guide...

You may already do this, but I'd also recommend using the search features in PDF readers.

It's a sufficiently different kind of data, potentially loaded and saved in different circumstances, that to me it makes sense to have a different file type for the purpose, loosely linked to PCG and SNG via those "load too" options.

Seriously, who cares what different file extensions do what? I know Adobe Photoshop and it is easier to understand. Cant someone at Korg software development team simplify this "Load Unload and Save" feature to say something like ..Save Combi..Save Program etc.. without first learning all the file names, extensions, notations and what file does this-that... and what file we need etc when we save?? SIMPLE!!! And then have us read 10 pages of the manual? Gawd... Korg all we want to do is Save, Load and Unload a few files.,,not be a nuclear physicist and launch the Space Shuttle!!

Try it in Preview on the Macintosh. Search for AMS, that page doesn't come up for a long, long time. I must have gone through a bunch of searching - but for some reason missed it.

Thanks!

I consider it an omission that the function saves only the RAM data, and not the references to EXs data. More clear?

For disk mode (as well as sampling and global):

VIdeo is very general..so to speak...and only shows one example of the "how to save" and doesnt go into any detail about the topics discussed above.

This is incorrect. See my next message.

Not trying to debate you but to understand better...incorrect based on what?
The EXs Samples dont get Saved when you Save Sampling Data?
From my understanding of Korg's concept ANYTHING in RAM gets saved
be it my Samples or Korg's Samples...unless is a KEP or whatever was
called on the M3.

I could not agree more. People who buy a Kronos do it to PLAY music, not to learn how to become computer programmers.

I know many people are long time Korg buyers and have learnt, over time, some of the 'tricks' to getting things to work correctly. They may also be dab hands at the 'deeper' workings of synthesis.

However, some may never have owned a Korg before and/or just want to make music - without needing to do degree level study to understand how to, say, SAVE something Rolling Eyes

Yes my point exactly.. Using and editing and saving is like navigating around on a computer with Windows 3.1 .. or Fortran Programming. Most people have a hard enough time already learning the keyboard without having to learn all this!! I totally gave up figuring out the really pitiful sequencer.. Korg needs to desperately UPDATE their software! Its easy for them ..since they are the ones that designed the mess.. Job security I guess!

At this point we should realize that the Kronos is a different type of keyboard. I'm not sure how different it is from previous Korg keyboards (not including OASYS), but it is different.

Despite how we may feel, it IS more complex to understand the file system of this keyboard. This is because there are multiple files and folders that can be created when you save objects.

This can all work in a semi-transparent fashion if you are only working on your own keyboard, but now and then there is a gotcha. Save All... is one. But the answer about this has been shown and we can move on.

This is a very powerful keyboard and yeah, some of the complexity is shown, so hopefully we can all try and help each other understand as much as we can in a musician-friendly manner.
