Drove all over town this weekend (I'm in the US) looking for a Kronos to try out, and couldn't find one. And there wasn't even an M3 in site either. But what I did find was the M50 in every store I went to, along with PS60, and every variant of 'micro' that Korg currently sells. Even saw an R3 in a couple of places, but no Radias.

It was pretty much the same for Yamaha and Roland as well... MOX's and Juno G's all over the place, but only one XF and Fantom G to be found. I've never even seen a Virus, or many other analog(ish) synths, such as the Prophet 08.

It seems that music stores around me favor the crappy low-end/mid-range synths as compared to the high-end ones, so I'm guessing maybe there's a higher profit margin on the cheaper boards, which doesn't make much sense. It sucks when you go in looking for real boards, and all you find is toys. Is it like this everywhere?

Sam Ash and Guitar Center are the only ones around me and the all have the same you are listing. Haven't seen the Kronos but did see the M3. Wanted to play on it but was in a hurry. They had the Viruses as well. I live in Tampa, Florida.

I almost never see high end synths in large outlets unless they're used.

Used: Voyager, V-synth, Prophet '08, and Polar. The Prophet, Polar and Voyager had broken or missing knobs at that. These are always one-in-stock items on the floor.

You're probably right in assuming profit is be the main factor in the lack of good stock at music outlets. Places like guitar center almost never carry high end gear from companies like Doepfer or RME. I imagine its because they like to put every product they have out on the floor and getting something like Virus Ti Keyboards shipped from overseas just to let one of them get wrecked by oafs and their kids is an obvious waste. So they pick up these items used and put 'em on the floor for some sucker that'll buy it overpriced and fix it.

Along those lines, if you go to a store that fixes synthesizers you're likely to find all kinds of amazing keyboards in stock. I had an R3 serviced here in SD and the shop I went to had the best of the best, including an OASYS.

Most pro music stores I've been to stock both the M50 and M3. It's also common to see a microKorg as well, but I haven't come across a PS60. The Radias keyboard has been discontinued by the way, although the rack model is still available online. The Kronos is obviously new and many of them were pre-ordered. I've been told it will take awhile before we have one to demo locally.

As far as other brands, some local stores have the Motif XF in stock but I haven't seen a MoX... maybe they sold out already! Roland gear usually consists of a Juno G, Gaia, and the Fantom G.

Nobody in this area stocks Kurzweil, Nord, Waldorf, etc.

Thing is... it's difficult for mom & pop stores to compete with the Internet and places like Guitar Center and Sam Ash who buy hundreds of units at a time and offer big discounts.

Cool
