So I spent quite a while mixing a track, making sure that levels never went in the red and distorted, and once I was satisfied but a 0db limiter on for those occasional peaks of volume. The meter happily spent most of the time in the level, right below distortion levels.

When I bounced the track and played it in iTunes, I noticed that it was significantly softer than all of my other professionally mixed music!

Do professionals gain audio past 0.0? Because it certainly seems like it.

They probably use a lot more compression before 0. Bringing up the levels around the peaks and reducing dynamics.
You can just do it with the limiter that way but it would be quite aggressive and probably not sound so good. Make sure to check out the pre-sets for your dynamics plugins. compressors often have 'hard master' and 'soft jazz master' etc. They are a good reference to tweak further from.

Its a shame really because you're losing... well, the dynamics! But we can't stop you or them from doing it. It sounds good Sounds Good
