On my previous Korg keyboards, Karma & M3, I always had the MIDI sync set to Auto. That way, if I'm not connected to some sort of MIDI clock it would use the internal tempo setting for the patch. In the Kronos, there are 5 settings possible. Reading page 758 of the Parameter Guide...

Global / MIDI / MIDI Setup / MIDI Clock

Intermal
External MIDI
External USB
Auto MIDI
Auto USB

I do understand what each mode does. So I know that I'll choose Auto USB. I connect my Kronos to my Mac via USB. Then send MIDI messages to it via USB from Ableton Live.

My issue is, every Korg keyboard in the past when set to AUTO, would work just that way. Sync to MIDI clock when sensing it. And use internal if not. But those keyboards displayed the Internal Tempo and let you adjust it when MIDI clock wasn't sensed. The Kronos when set to AUTO, still displays the quarter note = EXT in the upper right of the screen on the Program and Combi pages. And you can't tap there and enter the tempo or see the current tempo like you can if it was displaying the tempo value. Yes, the Kronos is truly using Internal MIDI timing, but you cannot adjust it. I can tap the Tap Tempo button or turn the Tempo knob. But I cannot see the tempo in the display.

I know I may have been a bit redundant in my explanation. Just trying to describe my discovery. I'd like to continue using AUTO. It's so convenient. I know if I set the Global / MIDI Clock back to Internal, that I can then see the tempo.

Did a bit more experimenting. The issue mentioned above is evident when booting up the Kronos.

If I connect my Kronos to Ableton Live via USB, and send MIDI data from Ableton, the Kronos indeed follows that USB MIDI timing. If I disconnect USB, then the display in the Kronos displays properly. I see the BPM Tempo display and can modify it!

Issue seems to be on a fresh booted Kronos that is set to AUTO and has not been connected to USB. It stays messed up until it sees USB MIDI timing.

Any ideas?

RC, I've noticed this also, but if you tap the space bar in Live, as to start it rolling and then tap again immediately to stop, Tempo will reveal itself on K.

Exactly. As I pointed out.

But I don't always have my Kronos connected to Ableton. I understand some possible workarounds. I could just simply go back into Global settings and set it back to Internal. But then it's no too AUTO is it? Confused Thanx for confirming this behavior.

Hey Korg! Guess what!

Yep, it's bummer and I hope one so small, gets noticed for the fix?

Confirmed! When set to any of the Auto settings in Global/Midi, Tempo always registers "EXT"

Please Korg, make note for a fix, so it registers Tempo when not connected/synced to software.
