ESX 1 smart media vs SD
ok so my question is this: what are the mane differences regarding
architecture?, is it not simply and SD card interface in place of the SM card
interface? this is the only physical change to the machine, the other changes
are to the OS, so it can read write to SD media no?
so what if, you replace the SM interface with an SD interface and loaded the
newer machines OS. to the older model?
what do you think would be the result?.
or is this not possible?

I was thinking the exact same thing the other day!
I think the OS is the same since the latest OS can be loaded to the older ESX.
The newer SD versions have the same internal memory so will not hold anymore samples, but it would be nice to have say, a 2gig card stuffed with samples to choose from.
I have an older ESX and maybe willing to try and solder in the SD interface in place of the old Smart Media if thats all it is.
I wonder if anyone has attempted this yet?
You can get an SD card slot to PCB quite easily, but getting the solder points to match up could be another story.

I'm pretty sure the firmware or if there is some storage controller chip would have to be different on the two models.
SD and SM are entirely different as far as data transfer goes.

this is why we need someone with electronics knowledge, they could have a look at the schematics to see if this would work. or the next best thing, a SM card emulator. 128mb SD cards cost nothing.... I'm sure you could even implement some sort of partitioning system for the SD card split into 128mb sections.....X-Trade wrote:I'm pretty sure the firmware or if there is some storage controller chip would have to be different on the two models.
