Guys, I have a Motif XS rack (it's the last piece in my midi chain)

Anyway, the midi output from my XS rack is going to the midi in on my Kronos. This allows me to send arp data from the XS into the Kronos and manipulate the Kronos sounds with the arps from the XS rack (I know cool, huh?)

anyway, it's creating a midi loop. For example:

When I turn the XS rack off and press a key (using the Kronos German Grand - I-A 000) and look at the performance meter, it shows that 1 voice is being used.

When I turn the XS rack on and do the same thing, it shows two voices are being used. (and it sounds like it... you know how it sounds when those double voices happen... can't explain it, but I'm sure you've heard it before.)

I know about the midi loop that can be created if you have both of those boxes check in the global menu with the Karma external routing...

But since I'm not using Karma, I don't think that applies here.

Any ideas how I can stop this... I know the data is going from the Kronos into the xs, and then back out of the xs into the Kronos (and retriggering the note... AGAIN) That's what's happening. But I don't want it to happen like that.

Any ideas to stop this? Because as of right now, if I have that xs rack on and it's on the same midi channel as the Kronos... I'm getting the double notes.

HELP. Thanks in advance.

For what reason are you going back into Kronos?

I think you mean back into the xs rack, don't you think Lou?

mmmm this sounds like a midi through problem wher you get the echo. I'd try midi out rack into midi through Kronos back to midi in rack and see what happens

You never connect Out to Thru, considering that Thru itself is an output Confused

I do agree that it sounds like an unnecessary connection anywhere. I suppose you've got to determine which device it is that is passing on messages you don't want.

You could alternatively just turn Local Off on the KRONOS.

The MIDI Out on the XS is also acting as a MIDI Thru. Typically, MIDI Out will not include the same data as MIDI In, unless there's software inside the unit to make it happen.

So, check out the XS, and see if you can make its MIDI Out act only as a MIDI Out, and I suspect your problem will be solved.

MIDI data is going out of the xs and into the kronos so that arps from the xs rack can manipulate sounds from within the kronos.

id like to be able to layer sounds from the rack and the kronos and use arps from the xs in combination with karma from the kronos.... but the xs rack is sending the data that I send to it back to the kronos. so if I press a middle c on kronos the kronos plays the middle c, then sends the middle c data to xs rack, the xs rack plays the middle c with its sound generator, then it sends the data out of the xs rack back to the kronos...(so mownthe kronos is basically playing the same middle c note twice...

I'm in my car right now and I just logged in to post something about the same thing you suggested. the xs rack has a "soft MIDI out/thru" option that turns the out into a thru.

hope this nips it in the bud. Ill post after infer home and try it.

thanks. should be awesome.have four karma modules going and at the same time having 4 motif arps. ill sound super full....or super busy/congested/muddy.....lol. with the right setup though, it could be awesome.

It sounds like you may be a good candidate for a MIDI patchbay. There are non-USB MIDI patchbays out there- I used to have a nice 3x8 with physical switches on the front (3 way front switches for 3 MIDI ins and 8 MIDI outs). Barring this, though, you may be able to fuss with some of the MIDI filtering capabilities of the Kronos and/or other gear.
I used to run into the same problem with my old setup where I had a Roland SH-32 on the end of the chain but wanted to use the controllers on the SH-32 to record automation data into the sequencer while the notes played back. I couldn't get the chain to work exactly the way I wanted even with all the local controls off and MIDI filtering going so I ended up just disconnecting things until needed and recording track-by-track until I finally grabbed 2 4x4 and 1 2x2 M-Audio USB-MIDI boxes and just gave all the gear its own unique MIDI chain.
Hopefully, though, you'll find some success playing with the filtering and local on/off parameters of the Kronos, Motif XS and others.

Good luck!

Yep in the Utility Menu of the XS Rack there is an option named
"MIDI Soft Thru" and I had it on because of interaction between the editor software and the XS Rack.
