Hi all.
Ok, the latest version is uploading right now. I will send out a PM the second the upload is complete. My connection is slow tonight, so there’s still about 50 minutes left on my upload.

Uncompressed it’s 690MB of data, and I’m using WinRAR to compress the upload to 300MB. Hope you have the means to extract RAR files.

Changes in this release.
1: The amount of samples has doubled to include many additional multisamples.
2: Every multisample now has a program.
3: All programs now have names.
4: Filter information for many sounds has been reprogrammed.
5: All issues that were reported to me by PM have been fixed, including the harp issues.

So… have ago and let me know what you think.

Regards
Sharp.

Looking forward to this very much, Sharp!

Nedim, you can be so literal at times. Smile

Of course, if you have samples of an oud, it's not "natural" to play the samples outside of the range that a real oud is capable of.

However, a "sampler" is not an oud, it's an electronic instrument. It's "natural" for a sampler/synth to be able to stretch and process sounds so that it becomes something new.

For me, part of the creativity of using samples is that you can discover new sounds by playing the samples outside of the original range of the instrument.

I don't like having this creativity halted, simply because the programmer decided that the certain pitches are not "natural". I want to be able to make the choice of whether I play a sample outside the normal range, or not. That's all.

Sharp, thanks for the extra samples! I went through them very quickly and am liking what I hear. Will play more, later.

I spent a few hours with the sounds, today. I stand by what I said, earlier, which is the brass and woodwinds are really strong! I played Taps with the solo trumpet and it sounded more convincing that any trumpet sample I've used before. I like the horn variations and will be adding these to my compositions.

The strings are decent, but I have these sounds pretty well covered already. The pizzicato sections have reverb in the samples, but they are effective, if you are going a big hall feel.

The percussion is a bit mixed. The snare doesn't snap and the timpani is distant, but they sound authentic in a big room mix. I like the cymbals and I really like the tuned percussion - glockenspiel, tubes, etc.

The choirs are nicely airy and the harp is bright - though it has some bass room noise, which is noticable if you solo it loud.

I know this is still a work in progress, but I was thinking that some sounds could be mixed in a program. For example, bass clarinet can sit under the regular clarinet, so you don't have to use two programs. Maybe some of the A and B samples could be given a stereo designation, so they can be loaded into a single oscillator.

Lastly, I'm glad that you shared this wiith the few of us. I would be very interested to hear the story behind how you are putting this library together!

Right – this is a long post so if anyone wants to read the conclusion, I’ll write that first – then give detailed feedback on particular sounds.

Conclusion (after 3 days playing/experimenting/comparing)
Sharp – congratulations. You’ve produced a unique orchestral signature that is full of character. As a collection it is really very good. Just as the Philhamonia, Berlin Phil, RSNO and RTE orch are all different, this collection does not try to sound like others – it has its own character. Your programming around the expression/touch is very good.

It’s been a joy to play these sounds and I will be using a good few of them in my future music projects – thank you!

Detailed feedback
The following notes are about only particular sounds – the ones omitted are good with no issues and are neither the highlights nor the ‘lowlights’ of the collection:

000 Trombone Section – fab, very faithful and true

001 Solo Horn – play a scale up from C4 to C5. I found F and G in that scale to sound different

004 & 005 – Horn Section – fab

006 Solo tenor – this is wonderful!

007 to 010 – great brasses, very usable

014, 015 & 016 Tubas – the best I’ve heard bar none

017 & 018 Chorus – glad you’ve reduced porto slurs on these; much better. I found these sounds worked best (for me) played as a single line melody as opposed to chords

019 Harp – Wonderfully realistic action and presence; loved it (although agree with Mike Conway on lower register boomy-ness)

020 Pizz 1 – very nice, but have to be played the ‘right’ way

021 Pizz2 – Good but lower register (C3 down to C2) not immediate enough

022 &023 Strings Stacco – I think you should rename these ‘Baroque Strings’. The characteristic of these sounds is rather hollow and stringy – which is more readily associated with earlier instruments.

041 Alto Flute – very good and very faithful

045 Great Woodwind – love the swell in this! Very realistic. Typo in title – should be ‘Western’

046 Flute – so good

057 Bells & Trem – excellent!

A060 – typo; should be vibraphone

062 & 063 – these sound so good but where are the cellos/basses?! Would love to use these but unlikely to without the lower register instruments

064 Slow Stereo Cellos – love love love this - absolute highlight of the collection - truth be known, I was working on a piece and this sound transformed it into something much better Smile ; range stops correctly in lower register but goes beyond normal cello upper range

065 The Cello – This needs some more work I think. Upper register has some kind of extended porto slur not present in lower and mid range (evident around C7). Range stops at B below C3 in bass – should be C. Additionally, the cello itself doesn’t sound warm and round; at the moment it sounds hollow and thin.

069 Smaller Strings Section – no bass or cello

074 Movie Strings – really like these; very responsive to touch; so expressive!

075 to 093 Percussion – very good; great to have some quality samples of orchestral percussion

Sure thing....
The vast majority of the samples are from here....
http://sso.mattiaswestlund.net/

Which as you can see is entirely free, even for commercial use. Not that I ever plan on charging for my work on the data. The samples were released for free, and so in that tradition I shall release everything I've done with the data for free too.

In addition to that data you can find some of my own samples in there, all of which is being release for free.

Yep... the library will cost $0.00

My intentions are however not to complete the work. I'm posting in the OASYS section so that I can bring the library to a point where everyone can use it and get a lot from it. Once that point is reached, I would hope that the library can be released to everyone, and then people can take it, do their own programming on the samples and share that effort, or pool it into a single PCG file for everyone to share.

I'm strongly interested in doing that in the KRONOS section of the forum as most of those guys are seriously not getting the concept behind KORG Forums, but as soon as KRONOS users start working on this, it will break compatability with the OASYS, so that's why I've not posted anything about this in the KRONOS section yet.

Regards
Sharp.

Sharp, that is very generous of you to offer it for free, so thanks very much for that and I look forward to trying it out when you feel it is ready for release. Will be interesting to see what others can do to add their own touch to it as mentioned in your last post. Sounds fun and a good chance to improve on some sample programming too Smile

Go raibh maith agat and slainte Smile

Hi,

as already said the library is very playable and has its own character.
It´s even very easy to create our own orchestra when loading the sounds into combie.
One thing you could do is to preconfigure the panning for the sections/instruments to make it easier for users to let the sound sit in the correct panning like they wound sit in the orchestra and do the same with variations of programs like building a construction kit. Some may not know where the sections sit/are grouped in a real orchestra so this would be helpful.

Thanks for sharing your work

best regards

Hi all.
I will have to go public with the link to the library at this stage. The KRONOS section is in bad need of a community based project NOW.

So here's the link for anyone who want's the data. It's not finished, but that's the point. It's up to end user to pool together to finish the work.
