The first synth that I played was an ARP Axxe in 1977 ish. It was in a shop and was priced at £1200. I must have been 10 years old and I was blown away. 1 Osc synth, all the basic analogue sliders and switches etc. back then if a Kronos was in that shop, mid to late 1970's . How much would it have retailed for. Yamaha had that big white organ thing at the time for about £40,000 used by Emerson lake and palmer. The shop had one of those in to.
I reckon £25,000 minimum.
Anyway I've been sat in hospital waiting rooms all day due to the ill health of my father n law and this post has given me something to do.

Sexy photo (I'm talking about the GX-1, not the stange man in the tight jeans). _________________ Current Equipment:

As rare as the GX-1 was, I'm amazed that store had one on the floor.

Sorry to hear about your father in law. Im not even going to guess at how much a Kronos would have cost but it's amazing how cheap technology is these days. I remember my first pc that I bought, must have been about 13 years ago. It cost £1000 (which was a lot more 13 years ago than it is now) and it really was just a bog standard computer. These days if you wanted to spend £1000 on a pc then you could get something really top of the range. I can also remember that when I was at school, if anyone's parents had a pc then they must have been rich! lol _________________ Current gear: Korg Kronos 61, Voicelive 2, Shure SM58, Alesis M1 Active 520, Focusrite Scarlett 18i6 |

It's not just what they cost that is interesting but what they cost to make.
I know for a fact that a certain $2000 pound 'portable' PC cost $400 to make in 1985. |

It's something you couldn't forget . The speakers either side were much bigger than me. It was in a shop in Bolton northern England. Unfortunately it closed down many moons ago . _________________ https://m.youtube.com/user/1967runningman |

Thanks cello & pepper potty. I've been to London with him to see a heart specialist.
He's a top man and deserves the best care . Lots of fight in him yet at 75!
I forgot just how big London is! _________________ https://m.youtube.com/user/1967runningman |

Rather something like $1,000,000.
Consider that the first Synclavier was released that year, and at the time it had nothing in comparison to Kronos (only FM synthesis), yet being OASYS-priced.
Also consider that Kronos does all audio calculations in software. That was super computer territory at the time, if even that.
Mass storage this size simply didn't exist in one piece for anything, not even for mainframes. Of course SSDs didn't exist at all, as Flash memory wasn't invented yet. _________________ Musical stuff: Korg M50 61, Behringer MS40, Abiro MIDI Controller, Abiro MIDI Echo, Abiro MIDI Remote |

SeedyLee, that strange man in the tight jeans is one of the reasons we have keyboards like the Kronos. But I know you are just kidding and you know who that is! _________________ "To me the synthesizer was always a source of new sounds that musicians could use to expand the range of possibilities for making music."
