|
|
Hello;
I am getting better at shaping a sounds envelope dynamic using compression and EQ, but I am not improving in working with volume- both perceived and decibel.
I'm still having a really hard time making music where my sounds all have a lot of high perceived volume, yet do not take up a lot of decibel volume thus hogging up a mix.
I'm trying to cut with EQ frequencies I want other sounds to have, I try to limit and gain for extra umph but if I put it after gained compression it just usually results in a very clipped, distorted sound; I just can't seem to get things to sound loud (especially kicks, snares, and subbass) without them hogging the entire decibel level and causing the entire piece to clip.
I'm still not entirely sure what a compressor's threshold and ratio do, but more importantly I'm not sure how to properly set them up to interact in a way that results in a loud, punchy sound that does not take up many decibels.
I really do not know where to go from here, I'm simply experimenting and hoping something will magically click in my mind, but I wish I knew how to practice and what to listen for.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. _________________ Current: MS-20 Mini, Minilogue, SY77

It does seem as though mixing is a dark art, and I admit that I prefer to back away from the mixing desk and leave it to the professionals.
Have you already seen this article on compressors? http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/sep09/articles/compressionmadeeasy.htm
I know it's pretty long, but it explains a lot of the controls. |

I've been working on my mastering/mixing/dynamics some more. Haven't checked your article out yet, Charles- but I will soon. I did reread sound on sound's article on compression and it helped me a bit.
Here's a loop I've been practicing with- any thoughts on the production?
