Hi, i finally got time to branch out from my fantom x7 and start learning the m3. So far I am really impressed with the sounds. I think it will nicelly compliment the x7 live.
I figured out how to make new Combis by copying the parameters from Programs. This gives me the souds that are exactly like the program patches. I need help understanding the following:
- if you click on "piano & strings" Combi (I-B032), the second part is set to VPM E.Piano, but it doesn't sound. I tried changing the Midi channels on the P3 page (Timbre Param), but still no sound. The velocity bar doesn't come up either. I noticed that if I choose one of the user bank Combis (U-A000), they are set up the same way, but when I change the Midi channel to 01G for the part 2, I do get a sound. Can someone explain to me what is the difference between these two Combis and what do I need to change to get the sound for the part 2 of the "piano & strings"?

I'm sure it's something simple that I am oveseeing, but help would be very much appreciated.

Thank you.

Well, it's kinda simple, and kinda complex. OK, for I-B032, if you were to turn on KARMA and play stuff, then KARMA (actually, one of its GEs) would play the 2nd timbre. You aren't hearing it with KARMA turned off because that timbre is set to be turned OFF except when KARMA is turned on.

To see why this is, you need to look at the P3 Timbre Param / Other 1-8 page on the M3. You'll see that timbre 2 is set to "OFF" here on this page. This means that the timbre will not play when KARMA is turned off.

Hope that helps explain why you aren't hearing timbre 2.

Thank you very much !!

Your answer gives me a glimps of the capabilities this monster has.. I'm looking forward to diving in... Karma is on the menu a little further down the line though, i first have to figure out the basics. I played around with some combis that have Karma setups and I can see that figuring how to program this would be very helpful in live situations. I would get rid of the drum parts, but the background arps and fill ins would come in great. I probably have to buy that software to be able to do this.

Back to the I-B032 - I can see that the part 2 comes on when Karma is turned on, but when I change the timbre 2 parameter to Nrm or On, I'm still not getting the sound from it?

Thanks.

You're welcome.

If you go back to the MIDI channel screen, you'll see that timbre 2 is set to play on MIDI channel 2. So you could change the channel to GCH to hear it, but this will "break" the KARMA settings for that timbre.

Or, for another way...

You could go to the P7-1 KARMA1 / Setup screen and tick the Thru box for KARMA module B under the MIDI I/O section (bottom right on this screen). The timbre thru function is also really handy. It lets you hear the timbres on other channels even when KARMA is turned off.
