Sorry if this has been answered in a different thread. I searched and I couldn't find an answer I could understand.

Ok, I bought a couple of the EXs packages from Korg. I manage to get one of them installed into U-G. Now I want to check out a different EXs, I follow the instructions, or at least I think I am, but it acts like its loading, but nothing is replaced in U-G, which I think is supposed to be how it works.

Also, I thought one could copy/load commercial EXs banks to the new user banks AA-GG. But I can't figure it out. The manual I'm sorry to say is worthless, or I am somwhow impared. What good are all the extra banks if you can't load in entire already prepared banks? Are you supposed to fill them up one patch at a time, not happening with me. I couldn't write that many patches if my life depended on it.

Finally, I thought you could also move/copy banks around. For example move U-UG to AA, or UG to GG.

I can't believe I have this wonderful music machine and there is no simple way of loading patch data into the existing emply banks or otherwise moving patch data around between banks. What am I missing here?

Does PCGTOOLS do all this stuff. Will it help me move for example a UG EXs to AA, or other user bank. If so how is this done.

I would like to fill up my user banks with commercial EXs, and forget about it, as I am not a programmer. Can this be done? I need simple baby steps here if possible. Thanks!

Yes you can use PCG Tools. Check the manual for more info but in short:

- To be sure the PCG file versions are equal, save a complete PCG file from your Kronos on a stick
- Load the bought PCG file in your Kronos
- Save this file (e.g. as complete PCG file)
- Load both PCG files in PCG Tools
- Copy everything you want from the bought PCG file to your own PCG file (note: you can only store them in an appropriate type of program bank: eg sampled or modeled, otherwise change it when saving the PCG file from the Kronos in the first step)
- Save the combined PCG file
- Load the PCG file in your Kronos

Did you try following the step-by-step instructions in the EXs manuals for loading the sounds into different banks?

For instance, here are the instructions from the EXs12 manual:

Loading the Programs into a different bank

1. Follow steps 1‐10 under “Loading the new sounds and samples,” above.
(See the actual EXs12 manual for the cross-referenced steps. -DP)
2. Set the .PCG Contents parameter to Bank U‐G. To the right of this parameter, the To parameter will appear.
3. In the To parameter, select the bank to overwrite.
4. Press OK.
The Programs will be loaded into the selected bank.

This part of the Operation Guide may also be helpful:

Loading & saving data, and creating CDs -> Loading data from disk -> Loading individual banks from a .PCG file

Here's another good tip.
If you're in disk mode and you select a PCG file, you have 2 options:
- Pressing "load" will load the entire contents of the file to the banks that have been defined in the PCG file. The expansions typically use U-G, but it really depends...
- You can also press "Open" and see the actual content of the PCG file. If you select a particular bank and press Load, you can load only the selected bank to a target bank of your choice.

In other words, by loading just a bank, you can load them into those new AA-GG banks and keep the stuff you may already have in U-G.

I have all my banks filled up. Wish there were more as I have to keep swapping stuff in and out. This is the method I've been using. Put any new PCG files on a flash drive. Go to Disk mode, touch Utility and then pull down the menu. Create a directory called PCG and copy the PCG files from the flash drive. (You can keep doing this until you run out of drive space. Then you install a 120GB SSD). Go back to Load. Select the PCG directory and Open. Select the PCG file you wish to load. Then touch Load. You'll get a menu page. Touch the PCG Contents arrow and you'll get a popup box with banks. Select the bank that the PCG file would normally be loaded into and OK. Then you'll get a TO field. Touch that and select the bank you wish the PCG to be loaded into and OK. The PCG will now be written to your selected bank. Best of luck

Ok, I figured out what I was doing wrong. Total lack of attention to detail. Im so stupid sometimes. I am sure I am the only one that has ever had this problem or will ever have it but just in case there are other goof balls out there like me here is the deal broken down at least how my mind comprehends it.

I purchase:

KRS01 - ProGroves -- No problem they are loaded into songs, and you just play them as necessary through the sequencer, at least thats as far as I have gotten at this point. Looking forwared to fooling around with it more. Excellent sounding stuff!

KRS02 - STR-1/MOD7 -- Loaded by default in PROG U-G, unless you have intentionally/accidently put stuff in that bank it should be empty -- A little fiddly at first but figured it out fairly quickly, the directions are ok, a little confusing. But success. Quality: 7/10 -- I am a purist when it comes to DX7 sounds, I like the 12 bit originals, [thus the reason I have an original DX7, along with a DX7II] but these are certainly worthwhile. I don't program so to me they are usable. Your milage may vary.

KRS04 - ProSplits -- Loaded by default into COMBI I-E. I didn't realize these were "combis" so of course they go in a combi bank. Duh!! Again this bank should be empty unless you put stuff in there accidently/on purpose. The directions were fine, I just didn't read them carefully. Again lack of attention to detail. Quality: 9/10, this is a great set for me as I don't program. It is also a "no-brainer" bargain at $19.00.

KRS05 - Ensemble Combinations -- Exactly the same as KRS04, but loaded into COMBI I-F. Again not realizing they were combis thinking they were progs. What a dummy!! Quality: 9/10 really good stuff, I don't program, again your milage may vary.

So KORG is pretty smart. They default their add ons to empty default banks. Go figure!! Now to get some more stuff and see what happens with AA-GG? Me thinks that from here on out it will be fairly simple and straightforward.

Lesson I Learned Here: (1) Understand what PCG files are and what they do. To my mind they are a container and can hold PROGS and COMBIS. You have to look inside to see what it is and what is going on; (2) Don't try figuring this stuff out at 1:00 am when your tired. Of course this is covered in other threads. Read them, know them. love them.

You can audition programs directly from the thumb drive, you don't have to load them. Select the bank and open it; then pick a sound and play it.

See chapter 4 from http://www.korgforums.com/support/kronos/Manual%20PCG%20Tools.pdf for a better understanding of the relation of programs, combis, set list slots and the global section of PCG files.
