esx / emx program change question

I'm trying to get my esx to change programs in sync with my emx. I've got the midi filter settings as 0xx0 on both machines and so far it will only change in song mode correctly. Do these machines not support program changes in regular pattern mode or am I missing something? I've owned an emx for a couple years and have a full understanding of midi so feel free to tech talk me... I just want to get to jamming in synch on these things asap!!

Before I had the MIDI filters set up mine would change my synth's program when I changed patterns on the ESX. Did you try leaving them all open to start with (maybe "exclusive" should be open?) I'll test this out because I eventually want mine synched up.
