Hello Kronos Community!
I am trying to use the Kronos as a MIDI controller to play in Garageband, as well as Omnisphere, and I am wondering how do I set the Kronos to only function as a MIDI controller, and not play the (awesome!) sounds of the Kronos itself...I just set up Garageband for the first time, and plugged in the Kronos and it was recognized seamlessly, only when I play a note I hear both the Kronos sound and the Garageband sound as well.

I thank any and all for the help, which will be most greatly appreciated!!!

~Goose.

In other words, how do I set the Kronos to function purely as a MIDI controller, to play my software sounds?

Thanks.

Take an INIT Combi, set the first timbre which plays a piano by default to have a Timbre Status of EXT (external) (on the Timbre Params page) - save it and use that for your controller preset. I believe that's all you need to do, although I'm not in front of a Kronos right now. Wink

Wow, that's almost as simple as I'd hoped. Thank you quite much Stephen, to have someone as knowledgeable and helpful as you around is quite a valuable resource, and your work is most appreciated!

As a thank you, an all-Kronos song:

It is also possible to go to global and set Local Off (I think in the midi tab). Now Kronos is just working as a midi controller.

Yes, that is true. Smile Good point.

But it's often helpful to just have a combi that is configured for external control, so you can select it and use it without changing global settings. (Sometimes when changing global settings, you forget to change it back, such that you think the keyboard no longer works.) But it's a good alternate suggestion. Wink

Hi GooseK87,

there are several ways to do this, these will be covered in tutorial 9 later this month. But here are the multiple ways to do it:

Kronos as midi controller:
- Select an init program
- remove EXI 1, so that an empty program exists.
- Now you can use KARMA for the external program without sounds from the Kronos
- Press the EXT button
- Now every fader, switch and button can sent midi CC information to your external synths or Virtual Instruments.

If you want to do something like i've shown in tutorial 7: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kd23OjFZjz8

Then you can use the program mode as described above, or use combi mode and only select channel 2 - 16 for that combi. So the General channel (1) will be reserved for your hardware synth or for Omnisphere.

Use Omnisphere in Live mode to access the 8 different sounds in omnisphere just as shown in my tutorial.

But tutorial 9 (which i'm still working on) will explain the following subjects:
- setup the Kronos as a multitimbral device in your DAW
- setup the Kronos as external midi controller
- setup the different EXT templates for your different synths.

I'm not sure why this would be preferable to using Combi Mode, as I explained above - especially in the case of having 4 KARMA modules to use in a combi for controlling external synths. Think

true, but if you only want a simple midi controller solution when working with vst instruments in a DAW I always use this standard empty program mode. Then i can route and record the midi notes from the KARMA GE i select in a separate midi track in the daw that is routed to a VST.

But you are right, for realtime purposes the combi gives more possibilities. But then it's not a midi controller anymore but more a performance beast, it's also harder to understand for a lot of people.

It's great to witness two incredibly intelligent people exchange ideas over such a creatively- valuable machine such as the Kronos.
Keep the knowledge coming!

It's like an old Knight Rider Special : KITT vs KARR. They are both indestructable, but who will come out on top?

Quick... Someone... We need a theme tune!

Hello everyone. I'm new to the forum and i'm planning to get a kronos soon. I'd like to extend OP's question and ask if it is posible to use kronos sliders and knobs to send its value to VSTs to modify some parameters in real time?
