"System startup failed, please disconnect any USB devic
Hi all have been on for a while Been busy building a music room for my Kronos73.
Bought it about 8 months ago and all went well, then carefully packed it away for a couple months .
Went to start it tonight and It starts to load red line gets to the S under MUSIC and stops, then this message comes up.
"System startup failed,
please disconnect any USB devices and restart!"
I have never connected any USB devices to it, nothing except only 1 mono lead to a Mono amp and speaker which it has always worked well. Haven,t tried to upgrade or do anything fancy. I realise that it is still under guarantee and will most prob have to take back to where I bought it "Music planet" in Wellington New Zealand.
Checking the Manual, it does talk about this fault but assumes you have a USB device connected when starting up. I don't.
I wonder if anyone else had had this problem.
OK have just done big search on the forum and found the DOA topic.
I did move it to a new location and it could be that the memory ram has come out of its slots . Not sure i want to open it up myself seeing it is still under guarantee.

this an update
I have contacted Music planet by email yesterday outlining as above and an hour later the manager rang me and we talked for about 1/2 hour.
He has never heard of this problem before and will be contacting their tech on Tuesday.
I have been going through all the topics on the kronos you guys have put and am up to page 54.
I wondering if I have a keybed/board problem.
When I play the keys they make quite a thump and same sound when realising them just slightly quieter. Every key makes the same level of noise. The noise they make is louder than a couple of pianos I have tried.
I have the 73 key, serial number 911 version 1.3 , which I bought 10 months ago.
will try to make a trip into Wellington next week and try out some other Shop Kronos
I see there has been 53 looks at this so far but no feedback yet.
I would appreciate some feedback from you because it is obvious that you guys/gals have far more expertise than me, thanks.

SYSTEM START UP ERROR
Hi! MIKEEEE
I've recently had exactly the same problem!
Had my Kronos 88 for about a year and used infrequently due to work commitments. No problems.
Returned it to Korg UK for the SSD and Memory upgrade and got it back 2 weeks ago.
Plugged it in and it seemed ok. Next day when I tried I kept getting this message and it would not start up. After a couple of days it did actually start up ok and seemed fine but the following day it again refused to start up with the same message.
I eventually had to return it to Korg UK again. I have just heard from my Dealer to say that it is back in their hands awaiting collection by me.
Apparently Korg have replaced the mainboard/motherboard in the Kronos. You may be aware that the Kronos contains a motherboard? I think this has been replaced as a precautiionary measure.
I have heard of similar issues on this forum where the problem was caused by faulty memory or SATA cables that may have become loose.
I think this is probably a hardware issue and you may be better returning the keyboard to the dealer or your local Korg Service/Support. I did not want to open up the board since it is under a 3 year warranty.

I upgraded my own KRONOS and I had the exact same issue. I also found the cause in my case.Returned it to Korg UK for the SSD and Memory upgrade and got it back 2 weeks ago.
Plugged it in and it seemed ok. Next day when I tried I kept getting this message and it would not start up. After a couple of days it did actually start up ok and seemed fine but the following day it again refused to start up with the same message.
When I installed a second SSD in my KRONOS, I also installed the extra ram at the same time. During the install I noticed that KORG had connected the factory SSD to the wrong port. I'm far from alone in this either. Quite a few others have reported the same finding.
Anyway..... after the upgrade I started to get this exact same intermittent problem you had which I instantly assumed was RAM related because I've seen this sort of thing before.
Remembering the SSD was originally connected to the wrong port, I decided to check the RAM to see if they had done the same thing there. Yep, it was in the wrong slot.
I swapped it around and haven’t had a single problem ever since.
Regards
Sharp.

thankyou
thanks Davyp and Sharp for your feedback. If anyone else has had any thing like this happen It would be good to have all under one topic.
Do you want me to keep you informed with any future developments regarding my Kronos?
One thing I may discuss with "Music Planet" maybe to Trade mine in for a 88 key model. depends on the price difference.

KRONOS START UP ERROR
Interesting Sharp!
Could be a Korg error? I never had a problem until it was returned for the upgrade? Didnt want to open it up under warranty. Wonder if cable might have been fitted incorrectly?? or the RAM?
I just let the dealer sort it out. They say that the mainboard has been replaced so I will try it out when I pick it up and get it back home?
Mikeeee - I suppose you will have to make your own judgement whether you want to open it and check out the internal situation? Could be cable or RAM isssue?
With regards to your potential upgrade I did upgrade/trade my Kronos 61 for a 88 model due to recommendations about fan noise and although it is a lot bigger the fan noise seemed to be quieter?

Re: "System startup failed, please disconnect any USB d
Coincidentally I got the exact same error msg. yesterday, and I haven't done any hardware upgrades whatsoever. I have, however, kept up with the KRONOS OS updates, etc. After the error, I disconnected my USB flash drive and USB hard drive, and rebooted, and had no further problem. And my USB devices are now reconnected without further errors (yet).
It does seem to me that KRONOS does not recover robustly from error conditions that may occur when trying to read/write to external devices.
These cheap USB drives, etc. are not exactly a byword in reliability themselves though.
That's a purely subjective observation, I don't keep an error log.
At least it didn't start displaying a blue screen and a severla thousands of hex numbers....

Interestingly I also did have this error a few months after purchase but after a disconnect and restart had no more problems until the recent upgrade of RAM and SSD???
MIKEEEE - It is worth disconnecting any attached USB devices and trying a reboot just in case.
However if the problem persists it is probably a case of checking the internal situation or returning for repair under warranty.

I have never attached any USB devices to the Kronos since I bought Brand new.
One more thing about my problem . When it tries to start up the disk light comes on for about a second and then goes out. So it looks like it cant read the SSD drive The only other lights that come on and stay on are 4 lights in the crater around the joystick.
I am glad you are giving me this info because I have been building and repairing computers for over 20 years now and when this Kronos is out of its warranty , I will be hopefully be able to repair it myself with the info that people like yourself are putting on the forum.
I have been reading all the threads about the Kronos and any that are problems I am copying with the intention to printing them out. Up to page 56 now. only 39 pages to go.

UPDATE
I got delivery if a new USB DVD writer today. Powered it up and connected it to the Kronos 73 with the factory No1. Masterdisk that was supplied with the Kronos.
I switched on the Kronos and got excited for a minute because it started to read the Master disc (flickering DVD drive led.) Just before it stopped the Kronos disk led lit up and the touch screen lit up with the Korg and Kronos name and the red loading line started to move up.(no disk light flashing as it should). It then did exactly the same as described in my first post.
The USB drive is a powered one which I thought might do the trick because I have read on this forum that some of the members said this may/will get around the stalling of the bootup.
Two hours later the Kronos was packed up in its box and I took it into Wellington, 1 1/2 hour drive one way to Music Planet who are shipping to Auckland tonight. It is going to the main Korg company in Auckland who have 1 technician who is said to be very good.
If the Kronos was not under warranty I would have repaired it myself.
So the Kronos Is now going to be doing a round trip of about 1000 miles for this repair.
Music Planet were good they offered to let me have the use other another Kronos(no strings attached) if there is any delay in me getting mine back.
I am not upset about this Kronos failure because with a new product, sometimes components will fail early in their life when they are working on a regular basis. They often have slipped through the testing stage at the manufacturing time and when repaired/replaced, it never happens again.
This has Happened to me in the past with:- Lowry, Roland, Yamaha and several PCs.
After the fix usually at about three to four months in, there has never been any more failures.
If anyone has any thoughts or has had work done relating to this fault my Kronos has(1st post) Please, Please, let me know.
If you don't want to post here send me a private message or email me
regards,
Mikeeee.

Interesting!
I kept running into a similar issue, where I'd power up my Kronos after not using it for a little while, and it would only boot part way, and then stop with a message about a system file being corrupt and to reinstall the OS. (Not the exact same thing as the "remove USB device" error, I suppose, but similar outcome.)
Anyway, it started right after I swapped the original factory SSD out with an upgraded OCZ 128GB SSD. I was about to blame it on a defective SSD and put the factory drive back in, when I discovered the same thing you did.... It was attached to the secondary SATA port instead of the primary. (I'm positive I just used the same connection the factory drive was in originally, so it's just like you say here.)
So I wound up putting the factory drive back in on the primary SATA port and left the new drive set up as the secondary. So far, no more problems.
I'm suspicious my whole problem was the new SSD not liking to be a boot device from that secondary port, while nothing was on the primary.

I have also had this error appear. My only difference is that it happened to me while i was recording and the Kronos shut off and then gave that error after it restarted. It is pretty unpredictable and very frustrating. If anyone finds something out about the issue I would love to hear the solution.

1. What model Kronos do you have 61,73 or 88?.
2. What OP are you using?.
3. Do you have the extra ram installed?.
4. Do you have a second SSD installed?.
5. Were you recording externally(Microphone) or internally?.
6. How long did you record for and if internally were you in combi mode?
7. How many tracks had you done when the Kronos shut down.
8. After shutting off did it restart on its own? or did you restart it?
9. After restarting and showing this error where approx was the red load line. Example:- mine always stops at the middle of "S" in the word music above.
10. did you have anything plugged into the USB ports while recording.

Mikeeee

This is an update from the Technician who has My Kronos73.
It was sent from Wellington to Auckland 4 days ago and I received this email about 1/2 hour ago from him:-

Hi Mike,
Your Kronos has arrived safely and I have taken a look.
The problem with the system start up failure is due to the factory installed 2 GB DIMM ram, which I have replaced.
I will email Korg re key-bed issue. It does not affect all units and depends on playing technique They are now supplying a new set of key contacts and an OS upgrade rather than replacing the key-bed if it is an effected unit. I’ll get back to you when I get their response
Kindest regards,/endquote
