This is a pre-purchase question:

I read somewhere here that when you are using the EMX like an effect processor for your incoming audio it only takes a Mono source...yet there is clearly a right and left input in the EMX.

I am confused, can you affect a stereo source?

Actually, it's only a single input: there are a stereo headphone out, L+R out, 2 alternate outputs and a single mono input. The ESX sample Electribe has the same configuration, only the input is a single stereo input. So yeah, it can process audio-in as a mono signal through its filters, sequencer (gating the sound), FX and tubes. You can pan this signal L/R and apply motion sequencing, so it's really not as bad as it might sound.

it´s possible but you can´t directly add effects to the line in. Internal EMX´s effects can be added to external sources turning off the audio thru, and using the Audio In track. Sequencer´s steps must be active. Filters can also affect the external audio

Damn it!!!!!

The EMX was almost perfect!!!

No stereo input??? What a total failure in design Sad

So the ESX takes in Stereo input but it only gives me 2 Keyboard parts...(Another Design Failure)

The ESX should be exact in Keyboard capability as with the EMX.

Instead I see they waste valuable space with a slice function that was never usable in the ES-1 and a time stretch part...

Is there a software hack to make these 2 stretch parts and 1 slice part become keyboard parts?

Everything else about using the ESX over an EMX i great in that you can make your own sounds...my only turn off was mostly the lack of Keyboard parts and the fact that this only samples at 44K.

Has there been others that have used the ESX as a rompler?

I can see now that the EMX is definitely off of my list...shame, all because the EMX does not take in Stereo.

why is a stereo input that important to you?

Stereo is very important to me because I will be running my Kaossilator pro the unit. The EMX has all of these amazing filters and 3 effect chains so the KOPRO would not only be an external controller for the EMX but also be a second stereo voice. It is easy to switch the KOPRO back and forth from controller to synth.

I have used mono effects before with the Kaosilator pro and I have never liked the results. The KOPRO sounds have a lot of dynamics that use the entire stereo spectrum.

So in looking for the next box to replace my current es1 as my beat machine I was hoping to get an added synth out of it as well as an external effects processor. The EMX looked like a total win until I found out that it does not take in external STEREO which I think is a total design failure.

So now since the ESX is designed to do more with external audio and does take in and process external Stereo audio that seems to be the win for me. The ESX only has 2 keyboard parts and the other 3 extra parts are for time stretch and slicing. I am hoping to find a firm ware hack (I know some one has done this) that makes the ESX other 3 slice/stretch part into keyboard parts.

Either way the ESX looks to be my next purchase. It has more of what I want.

2 stretch parts and a slice part make the ESX way more versatile than 3 more keyboard parts would, at least for me.

@SMK: I didnt realise you wanted to use the input for the KPRO. Makes sense then. I only ever really use the input on my EMX for an aux return for stuff I bus thru fx pedals, microphone or perhaps samples from my SP404 (which are all mono anyway to save polyphony)

I can however say that it would be brilliant if it had a L+R input. Freely assignable as a stereo pair or as individual mono ins. Then I could have 2 mono aux send loops Very Happy
