Kronos -- Shuts down after install of OS 2.1

Post by SwissArmyKnife »

Hi guys,

I recently purchased a Kronos used. It worked great for more than a week -- at home, in rehearsal, live onstage. Not a hiccup.

At that point, I saw that my OS was at 2.0.6, so I decided to update to OS 2.1. I installed the update, and the keyboard immediately shut down, then tried to reboot. I shut it off, waited, then restarted. It would work for about five minutes, then shut down in the same manner. I tried this a couple more times with the same results -- shuts itself down, tries to reboot, shuts down in the middle of the reboot.

The next day, after some major hand-wringing, I realized I had not installed the latest firmware update, so I did that. To my relief, the Kronos would stay on. I played for about an hour, then walked away and came back a half hour later. Still on.

Not fully trusting the whole situation, however, I decided to leave it on while my wife and I went to dinner with some friends. When I came home -- dark. CRAP!

Today, I started it up, played it for a half hour, went upstairs for a half hour, and came back. Dark again.

I am totally at my wit's end. I feel completely helpless. Like I have a very expensive boat anchor sitting here in front of me.

To date, I have:

a) Emailed Korg several times. They corresponded for the first three or four, but now have stopped answering. I opened a new ticket two days ago -- no response.

b) Contacted an authorized Korg repair center. They said there was little they could do except send it to Korg, which I can do.

c) All the things I mentioned above, including trying different power cables, different power sources, etc. All with the same result.

I can't find anything like this on the forum. If there is something, I'd be appreciative if someone could point me toward it.

Any answers? I mean, why would it start doing this at the moment I updated to OS 2.1? Can I go back to 2.0.6? Any help whatsoever?

Thanks for anything you all can do.

have you tried installing 2.1 again? Maybe it didn't go right to the USB stick was slightly corrupted. Make sure the usb stick is formatted with a FULL format from the Kronos itself first. If that doesn't work you could always try reinstalling 2.06. Like I said just make sure the USB stick is full formatted, not quick formatted in the Kronos not from your computer before copying on to it this could take 15 minutes to format. Good luck

I have had Thumb drives that wouldn't work well with the Kronos. I'd try a new drive. I just couldn't remember which one it was so I did a full reformat in fat32 and now both of my drives work. I could of swore it wasn't your problem.

Just put everything in the unzipped directory at the root of your thumb drive - if you want, you can leave out the "Manuals" directory.
There is such thing as Yamaha and Korg, but there is no such thing as foolishness when it comes to music.

Thanks for your quick response.

I've installed 2.1 about four or five times, using three different USB sticks, all with full FAT-32 formatting from the Kronos itself (thankfully the darned thing will run long enough to format a USB stick).

I'm thinking I might just return it. I did buy it from a place that has a 30-day money-back guarantee. I would have to pay the shipping, but at this point, the approximately $75 cost seems worth it. My issue is that I just have an inherent mistrust that they will actually credit my card.

This is such a disappointment. I researched and bought a Kronos for my church about a year ago, and it has never suffered so much as a blip. I just wanted one for myself.

Make sure the USB drive is correctly formatted (if in doubt, format it on the Kronos)
Just extract/unzip then copy all the files (not the top level folder - see below) into the top directory level of your flash drive - that will work

When you unzip them you will get a folder called "KRONOS_Update_2_1_0" - DO NOT COPY THAT FOLDER TO THE USB drive, just its contents
The top level of your flash drive should now have the following files and folders:-

no question 30 day right of return I'd return it without hesitation.

No putting down anyones intelligence but what is the auto power off set to?

And depending on the size of the thumb drive a full format can take awhile. Mine formatted at a bit over 9 gig an hour.

I have mine set to 30 minutes, at thirty minutes of inactivity, it shuts off, it can be changed. I am not saying that is the problem here but worth checking if the time it shuts off is consistent and it hasn't been checked.

Yes.

And there is a PDF file named KRONOS_AutoOff_E1.pdf in the Manuals directory of the Accessory Disc 2 that came together with my Kronos.

I cannot find the pdf or details, where do you set the poweroff value?

Since this document seems (for whatever reason) not to be available for download at the Korg websites, I took the liberty to upload it to mine:

See the Parameter Guide (version E6 - new manuals for 2.1!), "Auto Power-Off Setting…" in the Global Page Menu Commands.

This menu command may or may not be available, depending on the model of KRONOS being used. Default time, on models which support this feature, is 4 hours, and a message will appear at startup time noting the current setting (if enabled).

All of that said, I think this is a red herring for the case of the original poster, who describes: "At that point, I saw that my OS was at 2.0.6, so I decided to update to OS 2.1. "

While I can't say for certain, this sounds to me like a power problem - either in the AC system feeding into the KRONOS, or the KRONOS itself. I would be very surprised if it had anything to do with software. If this unit was purchased new, it should be under Korg warranty; I'd advise contacting your national Korg Distributor, e.g. Korg USA for USA residents, for more information (see the URL in my signature).
