Hello everybody,

I want to emulate on my Triton a function that in my favorite software sampler is called release trigger function, to control the volume of release-samples depending on the time the key was held.
Any ideas how to do this?

Hello Jay8,

I worked on your issue and did it in the following way:

The idea is to use the Stereo-Gate-Effect as a kind of envelope generator, which can configured to be controlled via a mono signal. One limitation has this solution : If you use release samples in stereo, they will be mixed to mono.

1. Start with an initialized program and set on the tab “Program Basic” the Oscillator Mode to double. OSC 1 will produce the signal for the Stereo Gate to open and close. OSC 2 will be used for playing the release samples.
2. To separate these two functions, set on the tab “Amp1 Lvl/Pan” Pan of OSC 1 to L001 and Pan of OSC 2 to R127.
3. Choose as OSC 1 Multisample 254 Sine with a level of 30. Set at the tab “Amp1 EG” the envelope as short as possible, so that OSC 1 will only produce clicks. These clicks will prompt the Stereo Gate to open and immediately to close again.
4. To have an controller signal which doesn’t make nearly no hearable sound, pitch OSC 1 on the tab “OSC Basic” as deep as possible with Oktave -2, Transpose -12, Tune –1200 and set on the tab “OSC 1 Pitch mod.” a Pitch Slope of 0.0.
5. Adjust OSC 2 as you like for your release samples but don’t change the pan-setting.
6. Store the program and switch to Combination Mode.

There is a simple and a more complex way to emulate the release trigger function. The complex way is more realistic. First the simple way, it will be easier to understand:

7. Use the first 7 timbres as you like for your key-on-sounds and timbre 8 for the program you have stored with your key-off-sound.
8. On the tab “P8: Edit – Insert FX - Routing” set for timbre 8 as BUS Select IFX1, for all other timbres you may use every BUS Select except IFX1.
9. On the tab “P8: Edit – Insert FX – Insert FX” select for IFX1 005: Stereo Gate, turn it on, put BUS sel. off, set send1 and send2 to 127.
10. On the tab “P8: Edit – Insert FX – IFX1” set Envelope Select to L Only, Src. to Gate2, Polarity to +, Threshold to 0, Attack to 30, Release to 97, Delay Time to 0 and Wet/Dry to Wet.
11. On the tab “P9: Edit – Master FX – Master FX” choose for MFX2 a reverb, on which you can also route your key-on-sounds. Choose for MFX1 any effect you wish to use additionally with your key-off-sound. These routing procedure will solve the problem, that the sound signal which is leaving the Stereo Gate will not only sound on the right channel.

Now to the more complex way. The simple way has the disadvantage, that the release trigger function will not work correctly, when you play different rhythms with your left and right hand. These disadvantage can be reduced:

7. Use only timbre 1, 2, 3,4 and 5 as you like for your key-on-sounds and timbre 6, 7 and 8 for the program you have stored with your key-off-sound.
8. On the tab “P8: Edit – Insert FX - Routing” set for timbre 6 as BUS Select IFX1, for timbre 7 IFX2, for timbre 8 IFX3 and for all other timbres you may use every BUS Select except IFX1, 2 and 3.
9. On the tab “P8: Edit – Insert FX – Insert FX” select for IFX1, 2 and 3 005: Stereo Gate, turn it on, put BUS sel. off, set send1 and send2 to 127.
10. On the tab “P8: Edit – Insert FX – IFX1, 2 and 3” set Envelope Select to L Only, Src. to Gate2, Polarity to +, Threshold to 0, Attack to 30, Release to 97, Delay Time to 0 and Wet/Dry to Wet.
11. On the tab “P9: Edit – Master FX – Master FX” choose for MFX2 a reverb, on which you can also route your key-on-sounds. Choose for MFX1 any effect you wish to use additionally with your key-off-sound. These routing procedure will solve the problem, that the sound signal which is leaving the Stereo Gate will not only sound on the right channel.
12. On the tab “P4: Edit – Zone/Ctrl – Key Zone” set the key zones for timbre 6 from C-1 to B3, for timbre 7 from C4 to B5 and for timbre 8 from C6 to G9. Now you have three independent working envelope generators for the three keyboard zones.
